About The Creative Process: Behind the Scenes
A production is never just about what you see on stage; it begins in the studio. When we work on a new show, we spend weeks in the recording room with percussionists, composing rhythmic 'jathis' that breathe life into the choreography. Every piece you see in our gallery is the result of months of collaboration, lighting design, and repetitive practice by my students.
For me, dance is 'sadhana' or relentless practice with devotion. When we plan a performance, whether it is a small thematic set or a grand dance drama like 'Krishna', the process is exhaustive and collaborative.
We start with the conceptualization of the narrative, moving to the musical score. I work closely with vocalists and percussionists like Pranav Dath to ensure the rhythm supports the storytelling. In the recording sessions, we layer each sound, ensuring that the music is the soul of the dance.
Then comes the time on the floor. My students, aged 4 to 16, spend countless hours at our practice space in Bangalore. We focus on everything from geometric formations to the subtle expressions of a character. For large-scale productions, this also involves technical rehearsals where we align lighting designers and stage managers to the cues of the dancers.
Bringing Indian mythology to life, be it Nava Durga or the leelas of Krishna, requires more than just steps. It requires authentic costumes, props like the Trishul or lotus, and a deep understanding of the story we are telling. When you book a performance with us, you are not just getting a group of dancers. You are witnessing a culmination of months of creative energy from a community that lives and breathes classical art.
