Getting ready for your first swim session can feel overwhelming. From the right gear to simple comfort tips, here is how you can ensure your little one has a safe and happy start in the water.

Did you know sweating in the pool is a real thing? Hydration is key, so I always remind parents to take water breaks to keep their child cool and refreshed.

A helpful checklist item: Breastmilk anytime is fine for your baby before a swim class.

A checklist tip: Bring extra swim diapers. A little-known fact is they don't hold pee, so changing right before you leave home isn't enough.

A handy checklist for parents before a swim with your baby.

A pre-swim tip: No solids for an hour before class to ensure your baby is comfortable.

The number one reason a baby cries in the pool is often the water temperature. I explain how to check if the water is warm enough for your little one.

Wetsuits are important because they keep your baby warm, help with floating, and regulate body temperature, allowing for longer, safer swim sessions.

About this collection

Your swim bag is more important than you think. Beyond a standard swim diaper, I always recommend a wetsuit, even in heated pools. It helps your baby regulate their body temperature, provides a bit of extra buoyancy, and makes them feel secure. Most importantly, keep your pre-swim routine low-pressure—if you are calm, your baby will be, too.

A Guide to Stress-Free Swim Classes

Preparing for your first session is all about anticipation. Here is my personal checklist to ensure you and your little one have a great time.

The Right Gear Always use a swim diaper, but remember they are designed for solids, not liquids. Wetsuits are a game changer for infants under two. They provide thermal insulation, making it easier for babies to regulate body temperature, and offer buoyancy support that makes floating less daunting.

Feeding and Comfort I recommend avoiding solid food for at least an hour before class to prevent tummy troubles. If you breastfeed, it is absolutely fine to feed your baby right before the session. If your baby seems fussy, it is often because of the water temperature. Aim for pools that are warm, around 30°C to 36°C. If the pool is chilly, gradual acclimation is your best friend.

Common Concerns

  • Ear Infections: This is a common worry. Middle ear infections are typically caused by internal illness, not swimming. Swimmer's ear, or outer ear irritation, can happen, but it is easily prevented by drying your baby's ears gently after the session.
  • Swallowing Water: It happens. If your little one accidentally swallows water, stay calm, offer a reassuring hug, and pause. Much like learning to ride a bike, these moments are part of the process.

The goal of our sessions is to foster a love for the water through play, not to force skills. Whether it is our 'monkey walk' along the pool wall or a simple splash, we focus on your baby's comfort and your bonding time.
