Creating spaces where nature and architecture meet
We build spaces that listen to the land, weaving architecture with the lives of the people who inhabit them. Here is a glimpse into how we blend nature, function, and local craft.
We designed this community space as part of a hospitality project on a coffee estate, creating a natural amphitheater for gatherings. The structure is nestled within the landscape, fostering a deep connection with nature and offering a place for quiet reflection and shared experiences.
This collection of images speaks to the heart of our work. It features an aerial view of the BIEC's sustainable green roof, a prayer wheel in Nepal scaled for a child's touch, and the organic, termite-mound-inspired form of the Bio Diversity Centre at the Agastya Foundation.
The Earth Alive project is our experiment in playfulness and repurposed architecture. Here, we transformed shipping containers into a multi-level structure with a watchtower, creating a space for learning and exploration that rises from the rewilded landscape.
The Art School at Agastya Foundation, pictured here at dusk, was designed to inspire the rural children who use it. The structure takes its cues from the surrounding rock formations, creating a space that feels both protective and connected to the earth.
This conceptual sketch for an institute at BHU captures our core idea: to let the buildings fall between the trees like a 'divine intervention'. Our architectural design process always begins with respecting the existing land and its natural elements.
This is our team, the collective 'we' behind every project. We believe in a participatory design process, and our diverse, enthusiastic team is the foundation of the collaborative and community-focused work we do.
About Featured
Our design process starts not with a blueprint, but with the trees and the terrain. Whether we are planning an institutional campus or a small community hub, we focus on letting the existing landscape dictate the structure by dropping buildings between trees rather than clearing them. This approach ensures our work feels organic and unforced, prioritizing passive cooling and local materials like exposed brick over imposing, glass-heavy designs.
Our Architectural Philosophy
We believe architecture is a feeling. It is about fostering a deep connection with nature with minimum intrusion. Our practice, often lovingly referred to as the 'Thugs of Mistry’s,' operates on the principles of slowness, diversity, and play. We design homes, schools, hotels, and community spaces that are a cooperation of art, functionality, and the stories of the people who use them.
The Mistry Way
- Participatory Design: We do not just roll out plans. We sit with people, listen to their stories, and build together. Every detail, from the scale of a prayer wheel to the layout of a classroom, grows from the community.
- Nature-First Approach: Our buildings vibe with local flora. We use strategies like bio-inspiration—such as designing structures inspired by termite mounds for natural cooling—and hydrological studies to ensure we respect the land's soul.
- Vernacular Materials: We are big on exposed concrete, achukal brick, and bamboo. By using local materials, we lower the carbon footprint and ensure our buildings feel like they belong to the region.
- Old Meets New: We fearlessly blend existing structures with fresh ideas. Whether it is an adaptive reuse project for a shipping container or the restoration of a heritage building, we focus on weaving the old and the new to create something lasting.
Every project is a learning curve. We are honest about the process—sometimes it is slow, sometimes it is messy, but that is how we build spaces that truly empower, heal, and keep communities thriving.
