Featured Institutional & Campus Architecture
A curated selection of our institutional work, showcasing our approach to creating quiet, climate-responsive spaces that harmonize with their environment.
A view from the Karunashraya Institute for Palliative Care Education and Research (KIPCER) in Bengaluru. This floating glass box, a discussion room, overlooks the central courtyard, demonstrating our approach of creating interconnected spaces that encourage both quiet contemplation and community interaction.
The entrance to the new hostel at IIM Bangalore, completed in 2022. We designed this entrance to be porous and inviting, using a blend of the campus's signature stone with modern exposed concrete to create a structure that respects its legacy while asserting its own identity.
The School of Architecture at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT). The building's dynamic facade and staggered massing are a direct expression of our goal to design spaces that inspire creativity and reflect the energy of a design school.
An aerial view of the large, open-air amphitheater at Vellore International School in Chennai. This space serves as the heart of the campus, a central node for school gatherings that is seamlessly integrated with the surrounding green landscape and waterbodies.
The fast-track building at Azim Premji University in Bhopal, clad in local Farsi sandstone. The design draws inspiration from the region's historical monuments, featuring climate-responsive elements like deep overhangs and north-south orientation to create a sustainable campus.
The main circulation spine at the IIM Bangalore Sports Center. The interplay of light and shadow created by the pergola is a key element, transforming a simple walkway into an experiential journey that connects various parts of the facility.
A serene water body at the Bagchi Karunashraya hospice in Bhubaneswar. The design is centered around creating a tranquil atmosphere, where the reflection of the sky on the water provides a sense of peace and dignity for residents.
An early charcoal sketch for the classroom complex at IIM Bangalore. This drawing captures the initial thoughts on creating a grand staircase as a vibrant, informal spillover space that complements the campus's iconic central pergola.
The 100-seater auditorium at the KIPCER building in Bengaluru. We designed this interior space with a warm, neutral palette of beige and brown to create a welcoming and focused environment for learning and knowledge sharing in palliative care.
The central courtyard of the new IIM Bangalore hostel. This space was designed to accommodate existing trees and has become a hub of student activity, visually connected across all floors to foster a sense of community.
About Featured
We treat institutional projects not as mere buildings, but as active extensions of a campus narrative. By carefully balancing new construction with existing master plans—as seen in our work at IIM Bangalore—we focus on creating porous, human-scaled environments that prioritize natural light, ventilation, and communal connection.
Architecture as a Quiet Intervention
At Mindspace, our approach to institutional architecture is rooted in the idea of the 'quiet intervention.' Whether we are designing an academic block, a hostel, or a healthcare facility, our goal is to respect the existing architectural language of the site rather than competing with it. We believe that a successful building does not need to shout; it should fit into the landscape, feel familiar, and encourage a sense of community.
Designing for Learning and Life
Our institutional work is designed for the people who inhabit these spaces. For university campuses like the Vellore Institute of Technology or Azim Premji University, we prioritize:
- Climate-Responsiveness: We use strategies like north-south orientation, deep overhangs, and natural ventilation to create comfortable environments without relying on heavy energy consumption.
- Material Authenticity: We prefer materials that age well, such as exposed concrete and locally sourced stone, which helps our buildings integrate with their context over time.
- Spillover Spaces: We integrate informal nooks, open courtyards, and central spines into our layouts, because learning often happens as much in the hallways and gardens as it does in the classroom.
Legacy and Context
Our extensive work at IIM Bangalore has taught us the value of the 'jigsaw' approach—making a new mark while completing a larger picture. This same principle applies to our healthcare projects, such as the Karunashraya hospice. Here, the focus shifts to creating serenity and dignity, using water bodies and landscaped courts to frame a peaceful experience. Our design process remains consistent regardless of the scale: deep study of the site, respect for the existing trees, and a focus on how light and shadow define the human experience of space.
