Hand-Painted Bowls & Platters
From daily breakfast bowls to large serving platters, these are not mass-produced items. Each piece is hand-thrown, painted, and glazed by me in my HSR Layout studio, designed to turn every meal into a slow, thoughtful experience.
The 'Pomegranate Bowl' seen from a different angle, highlighting the rich red of the fruit and the delicate green leaves. This piece is fully food-safe, making it perfect for serving.
An overhead view of the 'Pomegranate Bowl,' showing the complete hand-painted artwork. The vibrant red rim frames the design beautifully, making it a centerpiece for any table.
A closer look at the hand-carved details on my 'Dutch Iris' pasta bowls. The fine white lines of the flowers stand out against the deep indigo background, creating a striking graphic effect.
This is my 'Aqua Snack Bowl,' featuring a highly textured exterior created by pressing patterns into the clay. The inside is a smooth, brilliant indigo, creating a wonderful contrast.
A pair of 'Aqua Snack Bowls' stacked together. Their organic, slightly uneven rims are a signature of their handmade nature, celebrating the wabi-sabi philosophy.
These small, textured bowls are perfect for serving nuts, dips, or other small bites. The deep blue glaze on the inside provides a pop of color.
A set of custom-made triangular plates, designed to fit together like a pizza. Each section features a unique hand-painted pattern in red and black, from hearts to geometric lines.
These large serving platters are in the process of being decorated. I use a technique called slip-trailing to create the raised floral outlines before they are fired and glazed.
About Hand-Painted Bowls & Platters
When you hold one of these bowls, you will feel the texture of the clay, and that is intentional. I do not aim for machine-perfect symmetry. Instead, I focus on wabi-sabi details: the slight wobble in the rim of a snack bowl, the organic flow of a hand-painted floral motif on a platter, or the specific way the glaze pools on a carved edge. Because these are stoneware and high-fired, they are sturdy enough for your daily microwave and dishwasher use, but they carry the tactile story of my hands shaping them.
How Your Ceramics Are Made
Every bowl and platter starts as a simple lump of clay in my HSR Layout studio. Whether I am throwing on the wheel for a classic, uniform shape or hand-building for an organic, raw look, my goal is to keep the energy of the maker in the piece.
I treat every surface like a canvas. I use techniques like sgraffito for fine, carved lines or slip-trailing for raised floral patterns. The glazes I choose—from deep, moody indigos to speckles that mimic the earth—are all lead-free and food-safe. These pieces are meant to be used, not just displayed behind glass.
Customizing for Your Home
If you have a specific vision for your dining table, I can work with you to bring it to life. I regularly create:
- Dinnerware Settings: Full sets of plates and bowls that match your interior color palette.
- Statement Platters: Larger serving pieces with specific themes, like botanical illustrations or geometric patterns, perfect for hosting.
- Personalized Drinkware: Mugs and cups that fit the aesthetic of your serving bowls.
Caring for Your Ceramics
Because my work is handmade, you will notice slight variations in size and glaze, which is part of the charm. These are high-fired stoneware pieces, so they are microwave and dishwasher safe. You do not need to baby them, but they will appreciate a little extra care compared to mass-produced factory ceramics. If you have questions about specific glazes or want to discuss a commission for your home, I am always happy to chat about what works best for your daily rituals.
