About Hand-Painted Plates: Art for Your Table & Walls
Since these are stoneware, they have a solid, weighty feel that commercial mass-produced plates lack. I use food-safe, high-fired glazes, meaning they handle daily dining perfectly, but I always recommend hand-washing to keep the painted motifs vibrant for years. If you plan on using them as wall art, let me know, and I can ensure they are finished with the right mounting hooks.
At Clay Explore, my process is a slow, rhythmic dialogue with the clay. I work primarily with white and toasted brown stoneware, throwing each plate on the wheel to achieve that organic, slightly asymmetric edge that feels right in your hands.
For the designs, I lean into the sgraffito technique, which involves scratching through layers of color to reveal the raw clay beneath. I also free-hand paint using botanical themes like ferns, lotuses, and the recurring fish motifs that draw from our coastal environment.
Whether you are using these for a quiet pasta dinner or mounting them as a feature on your living room wall, they bring a narrative to your space. Because every plate is hand-painted, no two are identical. The slight variation in a brushstroke or the subtle difference in rim shape is the stamp of human hands, not a factory machine.
These pieces are durable and meant for life in a busy home. While they are generally dishwasher safe, hand-washing is the kindest way to protect the integrity of the paint and glaze over time. If you have a specific color theme or a custom illustration in mind for your home—or perhaps a thoughtful housewarming gift—I am always happy to discuss a custom commission to fit your vision.

I am Yashashri, the hands behind Clay Explore. My Prabhadevi studio is where I turn raw clay into plates that feel alive, sketching out bird and fish motifs before I ever touch the wheel. I make these to be held, used, and lived with, not just put on a shelf.
