Kathak Dance Classes for Kids and Adults
Experience the rhythm and grace of Kathak through our live, interactive classes—designed for all skill levels, in-studio or online.
This is what our adult batch looks like in the studio. I focus on creating a space where a large group of students can learn and practice in perfect sync, feeling the collective energy as they master the fundamentals of Kathak together.
The culmination of dedicated practice is the joy of performing on stage. Here, my students are captured mid-spin during a group choreography, showcasing the vibrant costumes and dynamic energy that make Kathak so captivating.
Rhythm is the soul of Kathak, which is why I emphasize practice with live tabla. In this session, students are learning to internalize the 'taal' by reciting the beats, connecting the sound of the tabla directly to their movements and expressions.
We often take our dance outside the studio walls. This performance was for a Navratri celebration, where my students expressed their devotion and joy through a coordinated piece in a beautiful outdoor setting.
Every hand gesture, or 'hastak', in Kathak tells a part of the story. This is a glimpse into our 'hastak' practice, where students learn the intricate language of gestures that allows them to convey emotions and narratives without words.
Our stage performances are a celebration of color, grace, and skill. This video shows my students executing flawless 'chakkars' or spins, a hallmark of Kathak, during a performance for a large cultural event.
The bond between a teacher and student is at the heart of our tradition. This was a special moment from our Teacher's Day celebration, where my students prepared a surprise performance for me.
About Featured
My classes aren't just about learning steps; they're about finding your rhythm. Whether you are in our Bangalore studio or joining live online, I focus on small batch sizes—usually 10 to 15 students—so I can personally correct your posture and footwork, ensuring you feel the music rather than just following a pattern.
Our Approach to Kathak
Kathak is a dialogue between the dancer and the music. To help you master this, we focus on three pillars: technical foundation, rhythmic precision, and expressive storytelling.
- Foundation: We start with the basics, including tatkar (footwork) and chakkars (spins). Whether you are a total beginner or an advanced learner, we prioritize building a body that can sustain the rhythm.
- Rhythm: One of my favorite parts of the class is the use of live tabla accompaniment. This helps you understand the connection between your movements and the taal (rhythm), making the dance feel alive.
- Storytelling (Abhinaya): Kathak is a narrative art. We spend significant time on hastak (hand gestures) and facial expressions, allowing you to tell a story without saying a word.
Where We Teach
Our studio in Kundanahalli Gate, Bengaluru, is equipped with knee-safe wooden flooring and full-length mirrors for self-correction. For those who cannot make it to the studio, our live virtual classes provide the same interactive feedback. These aren't pre-recorded videos; they are live, two-way sessions where I can watch your movements and offer real-time corrections, just as if you were standing in the room with me.
A Community, Not Just a School
Beyond the technique, I believe in building a family. We celebrate festivals like Guru Purnima and Navratri together, providing ample stage performance opportunities for students who want to build their confidence. This is a space to connect with fellow dancers, learn from guest Gurus, and ultimately, find joy in your practice.
