The Intellectual Approach to Jiu-Jitsu in Bangalore

Jiu-Jitsu is a mental game as much as a physical one. Here, we analyze the sport, question its conventions, and build grapplers who think as well as they move.

We don't just practice the sport, we analyze it. In this discussion, our head coach Rohit breaks down why modern Jiu-Jitsu matches can be unentertaining due to stalling and flawed rule sets, proposing solutions to encourage more action. This is the critical thinking we apply to our training.

Jiu-Jitsu is a mental game as much as a physical one. This is a common sight at our institute: students gathered after a roll to break down footage, study positions, and analyze techniques. This is the deliberate and detailed study we believe in.

Meet our founder and head coach, Rohit Vasudevan. As a panelist for the Jiu-Jitsu Community Day, he shared his deep knowledge on learning methods, the differences between grappling and striking, and when to start martial arts.

Our instructor Natasha represents the new generation of dedicated competitors. At our Community Day, she spoke about the perspective of women in Jiu-Jitsu, sharing her mission to encourage more women to train and compete at a high level.

About this collection

We don't just practice the sport; we dissect it. After every roll, you'll see us gathered around the mats—not just catching our breath, but breaking down footage and debating the mechanics of a guard pass or submission. This is our 'detailed study' in action: learning the 'why' behind the move, so you can actually use it under pressure.

At Institute of Jiu-Jitsu (IJJ), we view grappling as a deliberate, intellectual pursuit. We are vocal about the flaws in modern BJJ—like stalling tactics and inconsistent rule sets—and we train specifically to overcome them. Our philosophy is simple: if you can't explain why a technique works, you don't know it well enough.

Why We Train This Way

  • Systems over Moves: We focus on complete grappling sequences—from entry to control to submission—rather than teaching isolated tricks. Whether it's the guard game or wrestling for BJJ, you learn a functional system.
  • Active Competitors: Our coaching team, including myself, Sanjay, Nihaal, and Natasha, are active competitors. We aren't teaching theory; we are teaching what works in real, high-stress competition scenarios.
  • Critical Analysis: We frequently use video analysis and whiteboard sessions to troubleshoot match footage. We encourage students to question their own game, spot their weaknesses, and refine their strategy.

The Training Atmosphere

Located in Sadashiva Nagar, our facility is an industrial warehouse space designed for hard work, not comfort. It gets hot, the mats are standard grappling tarps, and the energy is intense. This is where we foster a tight-knit squad of serious hobbyists and high-level competitors who push each other daily. We invite you to test your mettle, earn your stripes, and join a community that values growth over shortcuts.

I'm Rohit, founder of IJJ. We're a crew of grapplers who treat the mats like a classroom, not just a gym. We keep the intensity high and the standards higher, whether you're here to compete or just test your limits.
