Biophilic Architecture: Integrating Light, Air, and Nature
We believe buildings shouldn't close the world out. Our approach to biophilic design uses natural light, ventilation, and greenery to turn static structures into breathing environments.
The central atrium at Konark Academy is the heart of the building, designed to foster connection. A massive skylight floods the multi-story space with natural light, creating a bright and airy core that all classrooms open onto.
A view from the ground floor of the atrium, looking up at the balconies of the upper floors. This open, vertical space promotes visual connectivity between different levels and enhances natural ventilation.
The corridors at Konark Academy are designed to be more than just passages. By opening one side to a central courtyard, we ensure they are filled with sunlight and fresh air, making the journey between classes a pleasant experience.
The assembly garden at the school entrance features stepped seating integrated into the landscape. This biophilic design provides a green waiting area for parents and a perfect spot for school photographs.

About this collection
When we designed the atrium at Konark Academy, we treated it as the building's lungs rather than just a lobby. By utilizing a massive skylight, we flood every internal corridor with natural light, reducing the need for artificial energy while creating a constant connection to the sky. This structural choice ensures that students and staff feel the shift of the day as they move between classes, proving that smart planning can make a massive building feel alive.
Biophilic design is often misunderstood as simply adding plants to an indoor room. In our practice, it is a structural commitment to occupant well-being and environmental health.
Sun-Path Analysis
Every project starts with a detailed study of the site's sun path. We do not simply place windows; we engineer them to capture soft morning light while shielding interiors from the harsh midday heat of the Indian summer. This passive climate control is essential for reducing energy consumption in schools and corporate offices.
Natural Ventilation
Our 'corridors of connection' are a signature feature in our campus designs. By aligning built spaces with prevailing wind directions, we create natural air circulation. This prevents that stagnant feeling common in large institutions and keeps indoor air quality consistent throughout the academic day.
The Green Interface
We treat the transition zones—the space between the indoors and the garden—as destination points. Whether it is stepped seating in an assembly garden or framed views from a classroom window, these spaces are designed to offer a visual break. This reduces cognitive fatigue and improves focus for both students and employees.
Material Harmony
We select finishes that age gracefully with nature. Our use of stone, wood, and low-VOC paints ensures that the environment remains healthy for occupants long after the construction dust settles. We do not build boxes; we craft ecosystems that support the work and learning happening inside.
I M Design & Development
I am Amrita Maitra, and I built I M Design & Development on the belief that spaces shouldn't feel sterile. My focus is on creating environments that breathe, using natural light and greenery to make your school or office a place where people actually want to be.
