Battle Ready: Competition & Freestyle
Hip-hop isn't just about the moves; it is about the culture. These are moments from my own journey where I test my skills and exchange with other dancers in the ring.
This was my Top 16 round at the Battle of Calicut. In a battle, it's just you, your opponent, and the DJ. You have to listen to the music and just let your body react.
Competing at a battle at St. Joseph's College. College fests always have a raw, powerful energy. It’s great to see the student community supporting street dance.
That winning moment. I was happy to take the win at the 1v1 open style battle at New Horizon Engineering College after a great final exchange with my brother.
A clip from my Top 16 exchange. Every battle is a conversation, a chance to learn something new from the dancer you're up against.
Receiving my runner up award for the Allstyle Battle at the Hipfest India National Qualifier. Moments like these are a reminder of how far I've come.
Standing with the champion. It was a great exchange with my big brother. In the end, it's all about respect and pushing each other to be better.
Proud to have placed runner up in the 2v2 open style battle with my brother Afraw at the Battle of Calicut. Team battles are all about chemistry and vibing together.
About Battle Ready: Competition & Freestyle
When you watch these battles, notice how it is not just about flashy tricks. It is an exchange, a conversation with your opponent, listening to the DJ, and reacting in the moment. I teach my students to focus on musicality and authentic reaction instead of just memorizing choreography, because that is what actually wins a battle.
Battles are where hip-hop culture truly lives. Whether it is a 1v1 open style at New Horizon or a team battle in Calicut, the goal is not just to take home a trophy. It is about respect, learning from the dancer across from you, and pushing each other to level up.
In my training sessions, we do not just drill steps. We focus on the things that actually matter in a cypher or on stage:
- Foundation and Strength: You cannot freestyle if your foundation is shaky. We drill the basics until they become second nature so you have the control to execute your vision.
- Musicality: Learning to listen to what the DJ is playing and reacting, not just dancing to your own internal beat.
- The Exchange: How to read your opponent, match their energy, and respond with your own style.
I have learned as much from my losses as I have from my wins. That is the mindset I bring to my workshops, a space where you can mess up, learn, and grow. Whether you are training for your first competition or just want to get better at freestyle, let us work on your craft.
