Urban Oases: City & Terrace Garden Design
Turning concrete corners and high-rise terraces into lush, breathing retreats. I focus on clever plant selection and vertical layers to bring nature back into your city life.
A quiet corner of an urban terrace garden. The large, sculptural bird bath becomes a centerpiece, while a backdrop of tall Crinum lilies adds a tropical feel and provides privacy from neighboring buildings.
This terrace was designed as a comfortable outdoor living room. A vertical garden wall provides a lush green backdrop, making the space feel like a private oasis despite being in a dense urban environment.
For the Naturals NOW cafe in Juhu, I created a shaded seating area using a simple trellis covered in flowering creepers. This approach maximizes the small space, providing a cool and inviting green canopy for customers.
The morning light filters through the leaves of the Thunbergia grandiflora, or Bengal clockvine, in the Naturals cafe courtyard. The hanging clusters of purple flowers add a touch of magic to this small urban garden.
A view of the narrow courtyard at the Naturals cafe, where I used a combination of climbers and an existing tree to create a full green canopy. This shows how even tight, enclosed spaces can be transformed into lush gardens.
In this older project, I designed a custom patterned walkway using a traditional lipan-like technique with stone. The path curves around existing trees and integrates seating, making it a functional and artistic element in the garden.
About Urban Oases: City & Terrace Gardens
When designing for a terrace or balcony, my first step is always evaluating structural load and waterproofing. We can create a lush sanctuary with vertical gardens and container planting, but ensuring that your slab remains leak-free and healthy is non-negotiable for a long-term, stress-free garden.
In the city, space is a luxury, but green peace should not be. My approach to urban oases is not just about placing pots; it is about structural integration. Whether you are dealing with a compact balcony or a wide terrace, we start by understanding the sun path and wind loads specific to high-rise contexts in Mumbai.
I often use vertical green walls and trellis systems to create privacy and break the monotony of concrete facades, turning bare walls into living canvases. For smaller footprints, I prefer specimen plants—mature, hearty varieties that offer instant impact rather than waiting years for saplings to grow.
Technical detailing is where the real work happens. We coordinate precise waterproofing and drainage layouts so your garden adds value to your home without compromising the building's integrity. It is about creating a functional outdoor living room, whether that is a shaded nook for your morning coffee or a verdant escape for evening gatherings. Every plant chosen is native and suited to your micro-climate, ensuring that your urban garden is not just beautiful, but sustainable and resilient.
