Urban Terrace and Rooftop Garden Design
Turning barren concrete roofs into private, lush escapes that breathe with the city. We blend structural solutions like smart drainage with layered planting to create a terrace that feels like a natural extension of your home.
At the 'House of Terraces,' I used Corten steel planters to create a warm, tactile boundary between the deck and the greenery. A pebble-filled drainage channel is both a functional solution and a beautiful design detail.
This terrace includes multiple zones for relaxation, including a swing and comfortable seating. The vertical green mesh provides privacy from neighboring buildings while allowing light and air to filter through.
Layered planting in the 'House of Terraces' creates a dense, jungle-like feel in the heart of the city. The vertical green wall and tall plants provide privacy and a rich, biophilic experience.
A long view of the Corten steel planters, which will develop a beautiful patina over time. The vertical green wall behind is designed for climbing plants to eventually take over, creating a living privacy screen.
I carefully select pots and planters to complement the overall design. Here, a cluster of modern, rounded pots in muted tones holds a variety of plants, adding texture and form to the terrace garden.
This 3D concept shows a captivating gathering space on a terrace. A circular concrete bench envelops a central fire pit, all under a trellis designed for bougainvillea to create a flowering canopy.
A concept for a contemporary rooftop terrace, designed for enjoying breezy evenings. The space includes a shallow water feature, a fire pit, comfortable seating, and even a telescope for stargazing, making it a multi-functional urban retreat.
This video shows the transformation of a terrace, from the initial flooring plan to the final result. A large, vibrant floral mural by Microcosm by Shruti becomes a dramatic backdrop for the seating area and planters.
The entry sequence for the 'House of Terraces' begins at ground level. A sculpted screen provides privacy for the foyer, while layered planters and steps guide the visitor upwards towards the main terrace spaces.
A quiet path in the 'House of Terraces' garden, where a single shrub emerges from the stone paving. The dappled light from the tree canopy above creates a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
About Urban Terrace & Rooftop Oases
Creating a rooftop garden is more than just placing pots; it is a technical exercise in structural weight and water management. We use a multi-layer system involving high-density drainage cells, geotextile membranes, and specialized lightweight soil media to protect your slab while ensuring plants thrive. You get the aesthetic of a lush, private garden without the risk of seepage or damp walls.
When we approach a rooftop or terrace, our goal is to dissolve the boundaries between the indoors and the landscape. It is about creating a space that feels like a refuge from the city's concrete, not just a decoration on top of it.
The Technical Foundation
Every terrace project we undertake, like our work at the 'House of Terraces,' begins with the slab. We prioritize structural health by utilizing lightweight systems that minimize load while maximizing green cover. This involves custom-fabricated planters—often in durable materials like Corten steel—that develop a natural patina over time. We also design for privacy without building walls that feel suffocating, using translucent green meshes that allow light to pass while establishing a barrier against the bustle of neighbors.
Designing for Experience
We believe a terrace should be functional, not just visual. We integrate elements that invite you to actually use the space: built-in concrete or WPC decking seating, fire pits for cooler evenings, and strategic lighting that sets the mood for the night. We focus on 'sciography'—the play of light and shadow—by using trellises and pergolas that carve the sunlight into patterns across your flooring. Whether it is a quiet nook for morning tea or a terrace capable of hosting friends, we plan the zoning to ensure the layout supports your lifestyle. Our planting palette is always site-specific, selecting shrubs and trees that can handle the wind and sun exposure typical of higher elevations in Ahmedabad, ensuring your green space remains vibrant with minimal fuss.
