Tropical sanctuary gardens for Alibaug estates
I design Alibaug holiday homes that blend deep nature with comfort, crafting private, resort-like landscapes where the outside truly feels like home.
In this Alibaug home, I designed a sunken outdoor lounge surrounded by lush greenery. The built-in seating is nestled amongst large Monstera plants and ferns, creating a private, cozy nook that feels completely immersed in nature.
The entrance foyer of this Alibaug house is designed to feel like a tropical pavilion. I used a curated selection of large potted plants to add grandeur and create a welcoming, green transition from the outside world into the home.
The morning sun highlights the varied textures of the planting at the entrance of this Alibaug villa. I used a mix of bright green groundcover and taller, architectural plants to create a layered and visually interesting welcome.
A simple stone walkway cuts through a garden filled with diverse textures. On one side, broad-leafed plants create a bold statement, while on the other, delicate flowering shrubs add softness and color.
A celebration of color in an Alibaug garden. I love creating planting beds that change with the seasons, here combining purple Angelonia with pink and red flowers to create a vibrant, joyful tapestry of blooms.
A closer look at the layered planting in a seasonal flower bed. By combining plants with different colors, heights, and textures, like these purple and pink flowers against a backdrop of red and green foliage, I create a garden that is always full of life.
The soft evening light of winter catches the vibrant green of ferns in this Alibaug garden. My planting designs are always mindful of how the light will interact with the foliage at different times of the day.
This meandering stone pathway in an Alibaug garden invites a slow, leisurely stroll. The path is flanked by lush, informal planting, creating a sense of journey and discovery as you walk toward the sunset.
Natural boulders are nestled among flowering shrubs and a manicured lawn. I often use locally sourced stones in my designs to add a sculptural element and create a seamless blend between the manicured and the wild.

About Alibaug Estates: Tropical Sanctuaries
In Alibaug, our tropical gardens are designed to thrive in the region’s specific humidity and rainfall. We prioritize layered planting, mixing tall palms, dense shrubs, and ground covers, which gives you privacy from neighbors while naturally cooling the air around your villa’s outdoor lounge.
Creating Your Private Alibaug Retreat
Designing a holiday home in Alibaug requires a deep understanding of the coastal climate. It is not just about aesthetics. My approach focuses on creating immersive, resort-like environments that grow more beautiful with time. We look at how the monsoon rains shape the land, using laterite and natural red earth to ground the project in its local context.
The Layered Approach
To achieve that sense of a lush, private sanctuary, we use a three-tier planting strategy:
- Canopy Trees: These provide necessary shade and establish the scale of your garden.
- Dense Shrubs: We use these to create natural privacy screens, shielding your villa from neighboring properties without using cold, hard fences.
- Ground Covers: A mix of ferns and flowering plants that soften the hardscape and create a sensory experience underfoot.
Materiality & Hardscape
We avoid bringing materials from far away that do not belong. Instead, we work with Jodhpur stone and laterite to create meandering pathways and boulderscaping that looks as if it has always been there. These materials stand up to the coastal weather and develop a beautiful patina over the years, making your garden feel established the moment the planting takes hold.
Designing for the Seasons
Whether it is the vibrant bloom of flowers during the summer or the deep, saturated green of the monsoon, we ensure your estate looks intentional year-round. We plan for seasonal flowering cycles, so you have a garden that is always alive and responding to the time of year.
Hemali Landscape Studio
I am Hemali, and I spend my days sketching how buildings and nature can melt together. My team and I build landscapes in Alibaug that feel like they have been part of the land for decades, using local laterite and plants that love the coastal air.
