Integrated Garden and Pathway Design
We design gardens where every element works in harmony. Discover how intentional pathways and integrated seating can turn your outdoor space into a cohesive, immersive experience.
At the Dumas House, we designed this unique walkway with an intricate, wave-like pattern. The path is not just for walking; it's an artistic feature that guides the eye and blends beautifully with the surrounding tropical plants.
About Integrated Garden & Pathway Design
Designing a path is about more than just connectivity; it is about how you move through a space. At projects like the Dumas House shown here, we used a wave-like stone pattern to gently guide footsteps, pairing the hardscape with tropical ferns to create a natural transition between the seating area and the lawn. When we plan these, we look at where you naturally want to stand to catch the morning sun or find shade, ensuring the path feels like an invitation rather than an afterthought.
Beyond the Walkway: Creating Cohesive Landscapes
When we approach garden design, we avoid treating pathways and seating as separate additions. Instead, we see them as the skeletal structure that allows the rest of the landscape to breathe. A well-integrated garden should feel like a single organism where the architecture of the house meets the organic nature of the plants.
Why Materiality Matters
We advocate for local materials—such as Jodhpur stone, Kota, or basalt—because they age beautifully in our local climate. Unlike imported tiles that can look sterile, natural stone warms up in the sun and develops a patina that improves with the monsoon moisture. In our pathway designs, we often utilize permeable paving solutions using metal gratings or stone with grass inserts. This not only directs pedestrian flow but also encourages groundwater recharge, a crucial element for a sustainable garden.
Integration Through Detail
Integration happens in the details:
- Built-in Seating: We design benches that emerge from retaining walls or planters, using the same material as your pathway to create a visual bridge.
- Shadow Play: Lighting isn't just about safety. We route IP65-rated fixtures through our metal structures and pergolas to create patterns of light and shadow, extending the usability of your garden into the evening.
- Monsoon-Ready Design: In high-rainfall regions, we plan gradients with slit drains hidden alongside our paths to manage runoff effectively, ensuring your garden remains accessible even after heavy showers.
A Collaborative Journey
Because our process is highly collaborative, we work closely with your architects early in the project. This ensures that the lines of the landscape align with the lines of the building. Whether it is a compact urban pocket or a larger campus, we look to create a dialogue between the indoors and the outdoors.
