Our Guiding Philosophy: Child-Led Montessori Learning
At Hastam, we believe that true understanding starts with the hands. We create environments where children follow their own curiosity, allowing them to bloom at their own pace.
This quote from Dr. Maria Montessori is the foundation of everything I do. The name of my school, Hastam, means 'hand' in Sanskrit, because I believe that true understanding is built through tangible, hands on experience.
This wooden tanker was handmade by an eight year old boy over seven hours. He started with a manual drill, built a table with wheels, added a seat, and then transformed it into this creation, all driven by his own curiosity. This is what I believe in: the process is the prize, and true learning flows when a child is deeply immersed in their work.
This moment captures the spirit of community and care I strive to foster. When our older students gently guide the younger ones, they are living the values of empathy and leadership that are just as important as any academic lesson.
About Our Guiding Philosophy
You will notice that we do not display finished, perfect crafts. When a child spends seven hours drilling wood to build a tanker, the toy is just a byproduct of their focus. We track the hours of deep concentration and the problem-solving journey rather than the final product. If you choose this path, be prepared for your child to bring home projects that look raw but represent weeks of internal growth.
At Hastam Montessori, we view the child as a unique individual, not a vessel to be filled with instructions. This is why our philosophy centers on the Sanskrit meaning of our name, Hastam, which translates to 'hand'. We hold the firm belief that true understanding happens when children explore, touch, and manipulate their environment. Located in Talaghattapura, our 5500 sqft campus is designed to facilitate this exact kind of freedom.
We move away from rote learning methods. Instead, we follow the child's interest. This might look like a morning spent in our garden harvesting vegetables or using real carpentry tools to build a wooden tanker. Because we keep our batches capped at 15 to 20 children, we can provide the supervision needed for these hands-on activities while ensuring safety.
Why does this matter? Because we want to build a foundation of lifelong curiosity. When a child chooses their own work, they learn discipline, patience, and concentration. You will not find rigid schedules here. You will find a prepared environment where a child can spend hours on a single experiment. This approach is rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori’s principles, where the educator's role is to observe and guide, not to dictate. Whether you are looking for our preschool program for ages 2 to 6, a Montessori-style summer camp, or homeschooling support, our goal is to create a space that feels like home. We welcome you to see this flow of learning for yourself at our campus.
