At groupDCA, we believe the journey is as significant as the destination. Discover the architectural process that turns initial sketches and material studies into enduring, lived-in spaces.

There is a unique power in putting pen to paper. Before any digital tools are used, we start with hand-drawn sketches and marked-up floor plans. This is where ideas flow freely, allowing us to explore spatial relationships and refine concepts with spontaneity and intuition.

Material selection is a foundational step in our design process. Here, a wide array of material samples are laid out in our studio for review. We treat this as a thoughtful conversation, assessing how each texture, color, and finish will shape the energy of a space.

Our principals believe in being present on the ground. Here, our team is on-site at a residential project, having a discussion with the client. Walking through the space provides a clarity that drawings cannot, turning conversations into real-time decisions.

Physical prototypes help us understand scale, rhythm, and proportion in a tangible way. This video shows our team in the studio, hands-on with brick models to explore different courses and patterns, refining the design through direct interaction with the material.

Our studio thrives on conversations. In this design discussion, our team gathers to review material books and samples. These moments of exchange bring new perspectives, spark ideas, and reinforce our belief that architecture is a collective journey.

To truly understand a material, we place it in its future context. Here, terrazzo tile samples are laid on the grass at a project site. This allows us to assess how each surface reacts to natural light and coexists with the native landscape.

A selection of terrazzo and stone samples being considered for a project. Material selection goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about how surfaces feel to the touch and how their character can guide movement and define the rhythm of a space.

Buildings are not built from blueprints alone. This on-site image shows the raw, transformative phase of construction, where structural changes are made and the new vision for the space begins to take physical form.

The facade of a new residential project is seen here covered in scaffolding. This stage is critical for executing the intricate details of the exterior, ensuring every element aligns with our design intent before the final reveal.

We believe the story of a home begins long before the final reveal. This is our workshop, where custom panels and ornate details await installation. This stage of patience and precision is where our design philosophy truly takes shape.

About From Concept to Creation

We move from abstract ideas to concrete structures through a constant back-and-forth between our studio and the site. You won't just see polished renders; we prioritise hand-drawn sketches, physical material prototypes, and frequent on-site discussions to ensure the final build remains true to the original design intent.
