Pottery Tips & Tricks: Hacks for Your Studio
Managing a studio is all about the clay flow and keeping your space organized. Here are some of my favorite 'jugaad' hacks to keep your creative journey smooth and stress-free.
Shelf space is always a challenge in a busy studio. This video demonstrates my favorite space-saving hack using simple wire racks to double our storage for greenware and glazed pieces.
About Pottery Tips & Tricks
Running out of shelf space is a classic studio struggle, especially when dealing with fragile greenware or freshly glazed pots that you cannot stack. My go-to move is to grab simple metal wire racks from a kitchen store and place them on your existing shelves. It instantly doubles your vertical storage and keeps those delicate pieces safe without needing a full-blown renovation.
When you are deep in the 'clay chaos' of a project, the last thing you want is to run out of surface area. In a busy space like my studio in Indiranagar, verticality is everything. While professional potteries might have massive drying racks, most of us are working with limited square footage.
Why Greenware Management Matters
Greenware (unfired clay) is incredibly fragile. Stacking it is a recipe for heartbreak. Freshly glazed pieces are even trickier—the surface is wet, sticky, and prone to picking up dust or finger marks if handled incorrectly. By using wire racks, you allow for better airflow, which helps even drying, and you eliminate the risk of the dreaded 'stacking collapse' where one heavy piece crushes another.
Studio Hacks for Beginners
If you are just starting your pottery journey, here are a few other things I swear by:
- The Sponge Hack: Always keep three types of sponges at your wheel: one for cleaning, one for smoothing, and a super-absorbent one for clearing excess slip. It keeps your hands clean and your clay body manageable.
- Measuring Consistency: Use calipers. It sounds technical, but getting into the 'pottery math' early helps when you are throwing sets of mugs or bowls. It is the secret to making work that actually looks like a cohesive set rather than a collection of accidents.
- Repurpose Your Scraps: Never throw away slurry. Even the trimmings from your trimming tool can be reclaimed. Keep a bucket of water near your wheel to wash tools and eventually, you will have a perfect slip consistency for joining pieces.
Pottery is as much about the process as it is about the final result. Whether you are learning to throw on the wheel or perfecting hand-building techniques, these small efficiency hacks make the learning curve a little less steep.
