My Postpartum Fitness Journey: Reclaiming Strength
I know the chaos of being a new mom all too well. This is my personal story of how I reclaimed my health and energy—not through quick fixes, but through the small, sustainable habits that actually fit into a mom's life.
This was me. I know the feeling of procrastination, of saying 'Kal se pakka' (definitely from tomorrow). As a coach and a new mom, holding myself accountable was tough, but I knew I had to start somewhere to get back on track.
This picture from 2019 was a real eye-opener for me. It wasn't about hating the person I saw, but about realizing I wanted more for my health. Accepting where I was gave me the power to start the journey toward a stronger, more energetic version of myself.
There's a big difference between healthy weight gain during pregnancy and an unhealthy lifestyle. I've experienced both. My journey taught me how to nourish my body for my baby's growth and then how to mindfully return to a healthy weight postpartum.
Here's how I reversed my postpartum weight gain. It wasn't one single thing, but a combination of consistent strength training, focusing on my core, eating in a slight calorie deficit with nutritious food, and staying active throughout the day.
To level up my game, I had to say no to late-night binge-watching and processed foods. These small sacrifices made a huge difference in my energy levels and progress. It's about making conscious choices that serve your long-term goals.
Looking back two years ago reminds me how far I've come. The changes didn't happen overnight. They were the result of small, daily improvements to my lifestyle, proving that belief in yourself and consistent effort create real, lasting facts.
About My Postpartum Transformation
Postpartum recovery isn't about 'bouncing back' to a pre-pregnancy weight overnight; it's about healing your body properly. After my own c-section, I didn't jump into intense cardio. I started with core breathing and gentle pelvic floor recovery, because the foundation has to be safe before it can be strong. We focus on restoring your core and managing energy levels first, ensuring you have the fuel to handle your daily duties while gently shifting towards your fitness goals.
The Reality of Postpartum Fitness
There is a massive difference between unhealthy lifestyle weight and the weight needed to nourish your baby. I've been on both sides of that journey. Postpartum recovery is a phase that demands patience, not the pressure to look a certain way in 30 days. It is about understanding that your body has gone through a monumental change and deserves a recovery plan that is kind.
How I Rebuilt My Strength
My journey wasn't about spending hours in a gym. It was about:
- Prioritizing Core Recovery: Working on deep core breathing and healing my c-section recovery area before adding any load.
- Quantified Nutrition: Eating for nourishment, not deprivation. I stopped viewing food as an enemy and started using home-cooked meals to fuel my energy, especially during those sleepless nights.
- Consistency Over Intensity: There were days I couldn't train. That was okay. I focused on daily movement like walking and consistent hydration rather than 'all-or-nothing' workout marathons.
- Managing Expectations: Learning to ask for help and letting go of the guilt. If my son needed me, my workout could wait.
