Experience the technical brilliance of the Lucknow Gharana. This collection showcases the purity of Nritta, where every complex Paran, Toda, and Teentaal rhythm is an offering of precision and grace.

This video features a Toda in Teentaal, a technical piece characterized by its fast-paced, rhythmic patterns. The focus here is on the clarity of footwork and the grace of the movements.

Exploring the Nritta Paksh, or pure dance element, of Kathak through a beautiful bandish in Teentaal. This aspect of dance celebrates rhythm and movement for their own sake, without a specific narrative.

Presenting a Thaat in Dhamar Taal, a rhythmic cycle of 14 beats. Thaat is the opening piece in a traditional Kathak performance, where the dancer introduces the rhythm with subtle and stylized movements.

This is an Amad, another introductory piece in Kathak, performed here in Dhamar Taal. The word 'Amad' means 'arrival', and the composition gracefully announces the dancer's entry.

A performance of Uthaan in Teentaal. This composition serves as a beautiful opening, establishing the character of the rhythm with elegant and precise movements.

Here I present a Parmelu in a 15-beat cycle. A Parmelu is a unique composition that blends the sounds of Kathak footwork with the sounds of percussion instruments like the pakhawaj.

A performance of a beautiful Paran in Ektaal, a rhythmic cycle of 12 beats. Parans are powerful compositions that use bols, or mnemonic syllables, derived from the pakhawaj drum.

This is another rendition of a Paran in Teentaal, filmed against a historical backdrop. The architecture complements the timeless nature of this classical art form.

My favorite Paran in Teentaal, performed against a vibrant mural. This piece showcases the dynamic spins, or chakkars, and the sharp, precise movements that are characteristic of Nritta.

A graceful Tukda, which is a short, brilliant piece, from the composition ‘Kanha Mai Tose Hari’. This was filmed in my studio, a space where I practice and teach the intricacies of Kathak.

About Rhythmic Mastery (Nritta)

In these Nritta compositions, my focus remains on the precise calibration of the Tatkar (footwork) against the rhythmic cycle of the Teentaal. When practicing these Parans or Todas at home, remember that the audible clarity of your Ghungroos is secondary to the controlled balance of your posture, which ensures each chakka (spin) retains its grace.
