Witnessing the dedication of young students on stage is a privilege. As a judge, I look beyond costumes and choreography to find the 'Bhaav' and sincerity that define a true artist.

A formal photograph with the principal and esteemed faculty at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar School of Specialized Excellence. It was an honor to be part of their district-level dance competition.

At the judge's desk, deeply focused on a student's performance. My goal is to provide dance competition feedback that helps young artists grow, focusing on their dedication, creativity, and expression.

This clip shows my perspective from the judge's panel, followed by a glimpse of a spirited student performance. It was heartwarming to see such dedication to folk traditions at the School of Specialized Excellence.

The stage came alive with this colorful Haryanvi folk dance. Judging such performances involves appreciating the cultural authenticity, group synchronization, and joyful energy of the young dancers.

A beautiful Bihu dance performance by the students. My adjudication experience covers a wide range of Indian folk styles, and it is always a delight to see regional traditions presented with such care.

About Nurturing Young Talent at Schools

When I sit at the judge's desk, my focus is never just on assigning a score. I watch for the clarity of Taal (rhythm) during complex footwork and the depth of Bhaav (expression) in a student's eyes. I believe that school competitions are a sacred space for growth, which is why I prioritize providing specific, constructive feedback that helps every participant understand the importance of their Riaz (practice) and stage presence, regardless of their final ranking.

My Approach to Adjudication

Judging a school competition requires a balance of critical technical evaluation and immense encouragement. My training in the Lucknow Gharana under Pt. Birju Maharaj ji and Saswati Didi taught me that dance is an offering. When I evaluate performances—whether classical Kathak, Bharatanatyam, or regional folk styles—I look for three core elements:

  • Technical Integrity: Proper posture, alignment, and an understanding of the rhythmic cycle.
  • Cultural Authenticity: How well the student connects with the specific folk or classical tradition they are representing.
  • Sincerity of Effort: A performance that comes from the heart, even if it is not technically flawless.

Why Invite an Expert Judge?

Organizing a school dance competition is a significant undertaking. My role is to provide an objective, professional assessment that validates the hard work of the students and the teachers. By inviting an experienced artist to adjudicate, you ensure that the feedback given is meaningful. I often include a short 'Lecture-Demonstration' or a closing motivational address during full-day events, where I can share insights on the discipline required for performing arts.

I have had the honor of judging at institutions like Apeejay School, Bal Bharti Public School, and the School of Specialized Excellence. My goal is always to leave the participants feeling inspired to continue their journey in dance. Whether you are hosting a zonal competition, an annual day cultural fest, or an inter-school cultural meet, I bring a commitment to fairness and artistic integrity to the judge's panel.
