About Judging at Colleges & Universities
When I sit on the judging panel for university dance competitions, my evaluation goes beyond standard steps. I focus on the Taal (rhythm) and Laya (tempo) that define classical foundations, but I am equally moved by the emotional expression and the narrative clarity a performer brings to the stage. For me, a winning performance is one where the dancer treats the stage as a sacred space, showing both respect for the art form and the courage to perform with authenticity.
My approach to adjudication is rooted in the Lucknow Gharana traditions passed down to me by my gurus, Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj ji and Saswati Sen ji. When judging at institutions like SRCC or Shaheed Rajguru College, I observe the performer’s command over their chosen style. In classical categories like Kathak, I closely examine footwork, hand gestures, and the clarity of Padhant. In folk categories, I look for cultural authenticity and the energy of the ensemble.
Why Invite an Expert Judge?
A competition is only as strong as the standard set by its judges. I provide more than just marks on a score sheet. I offer verbal, constructive feedback that helps student performers understand where they excelled and where they can refine their technique. My goal is to ensure that every participant, regardless of the outcome, feels seen and encouraged.
Available Judging Formats
-
Half-Day Judging: Best for smaller events, covering up to 30 acts with formal scoring and a closing motivational address for the participants.
-
Full-Day Adjudication & Live Demo: Ideal for university fests with multiple rounds. This includes an interactive session where I perform, offering a live demonstration of classical nuances. This adds value to the event, inspiring students to pursue the art form beyond the competition stage.
Whether it is a solo performance or a large group production, I am committed to maintaining unbiased standards while celebrating the dedication of every dancer on stage.
