The Art of Natural Dyeing: Our Process and Techniques
We treat color as a conversation with nature. From eco-printing with local marigolds to our unique one-step dyes, see how we bring fabric to life without harming the water.
This is a look at our unique one-step dyes in action. We've combined the plant dye source and mordant into a single formula, making the natural dyeing process faster and more efficient without compromising on quality or fastness.
A simple guide on how to eco-print with marigold petals. This beautiful technique involves mordanting the fabric, arranging the petals, steaming them, and revealing the lovely impressions left behind.
Wondering how to care for your naturally dyed fabrics? Our co-founder, Arun, demonstrates the final washing process using a neutral, factory-made soap to ensure your colors last while keeping our waterways clean.
A glimpse into our workspace. Creating our symphony of colors is an orchestra of calculations, natural dye sources, and water. Here, we are preparing handwoven stoles, with five new shades in progress.
About this collection
You might think natural dyeing is a messy, multi-day ordeal, but we have simplified the science. We developed a proprietary one-step dye paste that combines the mordant and the pigment, cutting out the need for boiling or complex chemistry. This means you can get professional, wash-fast results at home without turning your kitchen into a science lab.
At Color Ashram, we believe the fashion industry's reliance on synthetic chemicals has to stop. Our dyeing process is a response to that crisis. Whether we are using Madder root, Indigo, or pomegranate peel, every step is calculated to minimize water waste and energy consumption.
Our Core Techniques
- One-Step Amrit Dyes: We have eliminated the tedious mordanting process. Our ready-to-use pastes allow you to apply color directly to natural fibers, ensuring deep, vibrant hues that hold up to washing.
- Eco-Printing: This is where we get the most joy. By arranging real marigold petals or leaves onto fabric, bundling them tightly, and steaming them, we transfer the natural pigments directly from the plant to the cloth. It is a slow, tactile process that produces one-of-a-kind patterns every single time.
- Shibori & Resist: Using traditional binding methods, we create geometric patterns that celebrate the organic texture of Khadi and organic cotton.
Why Process Matters
We do not just care about the final garment. We care about the runoff. Many synthetic dyes leave toxic residue in the water table, but our plant-based methods are biodegradable. When you wash a piece dyed with our Indigo or Harda, the water that goes down the drain is safe for the soil. If you are interested in trying this yourself, our DIY kits come with the same non-toxic pastes we use in our Hebbal studio, complete with video tutorials to guide you through the process.
Color Ashram
We are Color Ashram, a mix of visual arts, theatre, and deep respect for the earth. Based in Mysuru, we believe in hands-on learning, where we stain our palms and unlearn industrial habits together. Come over, get your hands messy, and discover what color actually means.
