An intern experiments with natural indigo, dipping a fabric swatch to create different shades of blue. Indigo is unique among natural dyes, developing its color from green to blue as it oxidizes in the air.

About this collection
Indigo is the only natural dye that reveals its color through oxidation. When you dip your fabric into our vats, it emerges green and magically turns blue right before your eyes as it hits the air. It is a slow, grounding process that teaches you to watch and wait rather than rush to the finish line.
Our indigo workshops are not just about creating a blue cloth; they are about understanding the relationship between the plant, the vat, and the fiber. Indigo is known in the dyeing world as the 'black sheep' because it behaves differently than other natural dyes—it requires patience, temperature control, and a deep respect for the fermentation process.
In our sessions, you will learn the art of Shibori, a Japanese resist-dyeing technique that involves folding, twisting, tying, and clamping fabric before it enters the dye bath. By blocking the dye from reaching certain areas, you create stunning, crisp white patterns against the deep blue indigo.
We keep our vats chemical-free, sticking to our 'zero-tox' philosophy. This means your hands get messy with real plant matter, not synthetic chemicals. Whether you are in our main studio in the Hebbal Industrial Area of Mysuru or joining us for one of our pop-up workshops in Bengaluru, the goal remains the same: to slow down and connect with the material. We provide all the cotton canvases and tools you need, so you can walk out with a unique, handmade creation that is safe for your skin and kind to the environment. If you want to dive deeper into the chemistry, we also cover fiber science and mordant basics in our longer modules.
Color Ashram
We are the team at Color Ashram, where hands get messy and ideas spark. We believe that getting your hands stained with indigo is the best way to reconnect with the earth. Come hang out in our studio, where the vats are always brewing and there is always a story to share.
