Working with indigo is a love-hate relationship, but getting my hands stained with this rich, natural pigment is part of the magic. It's a messy, beautiful, and rewarding process.

Here's a little behind-the-scenes look at me creating a new indigo pattern. The reveal is always the most exciting part, seeing the design emerge from the dye.

About The Magic of Indigo Dyeing
Indigo isn’t just dipping cloth in blue; it is a live, unpredictable process that requires patience. You will learn to maintain a living vat, balance pH levels, and witness the magic of oxidation where the fabric turns from green to deep blue the moment it touches the air.
Working with indigo is a love-hate relationship, but that is exactly what makes it so rewarding. In these sessions, we move beyond basic tie-dye to understand the history and chemistry of this natural pigment.
What we cover:
- The Indigo Vat: We don't use chemicals. You will learn how to prepare a living vat and manage its health so it lasts for multiple dyeing sessions.
- Shibori Techniques: I teach folding, twisting, and binding methods like Itajime and Arashi to create distinct, beautiful patterns.
- Oxidation Magic: You will see the transformation happen in real-time. It is the moment the fabric hits the air and changes from a yellowish-green to that signature, deep indigo blue.
Why this approach?
Traditional dyeing is a slow, meditative process. Whether you are looking to create unique fabric pieces for your home or exploring the potential to start your own sustainable craft business, this workshop gives you the technical foundation to get it right at home. We focus on the 'why'—why the vat needs specific care, why certain fabrics react differently, and why the process is so deeply satisfying. Come with an open mind, and expect to get your hands a little stained.
