Realistic Portrait Rangoli
I create hand-drawn portraits using charcoal and stone powder. My goal is to capture the expression and character of the person, whether it is a spiritual figure or a loved one.
This is a 3x5 foot realistic rangoli portrait of a 'Saadhu' or holy man. Created for the Maruti Jatra Mahotsav, the piece focuses on capturing the wisdom and intensity in his eyes and the texture of his beard.

About Realistic Portraits
It takes me about 5 to 7 hours to get a face right, focusing entirely on the eyes and expression. I use a mix of charcoal powder for the deep blacks and white stone powder for the highlights, sealing the finished piece with a fixative spray so it lasts longer than typical rangoli.
When you commission a portrait from me, you are not getting a stencil-based design. I use digital mapping to ensure the proportions are accurate, but the actual drawing is 100% freehand. This is why the likeness is usually around 90-95% to the reference photo.
I treat the floor like a canvas. Using charcoal for shading allows me to create depth in skin tones and textures that colored sand simply cannot achieve. I focus on the details that matter: the wisdom in a sadhu's eyes, the intensity in a leader's expression, or the gentle features of a family member.
Because I use stone powder and charcoal, these portraits are durable, but they do require a controlled environment. I recommend a dust-free area, and I always cordon off the work-in-progress to keep it safe while I am on-site. If this is for a specific event like a tribute, a festival, or a birthday, let me know the vibe you are looking for. I am happy to travel across Karnataka to bring these stories to life at your venue.
