Bringing Karnataka’s rich folklore and cultural legends to life through large-scale, hand-drawn rangoli installations.

This 4x7 foot rangoli depicts the divine energies of Tulunadu, Panjurli and Guliga, as seen in the movie 'Kantara'. The artwork captures the fierce and spiritual nature of the Daivas with intricate details and a vibrant blue background.

A rangoli of Bhuvaneshwari Devi, the mother goddess of Karnataka, created for a Rajyotsava celebration at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad. The artwork shows her against the backdrop of the state flag.

This rangoli of Kannada Mathe, or Mother Kannada, was made for Karnataka Rajyotsava. It portrays the goddess holding the state flag against a map of Karnataka, symbolizing our pride in our language and culture.

About Karnataka's Cultural Canvas

I do not use stencils for my work. Every detail, from the fierce eyes of a Yakshagana performer to the delicate features of Bhuvaneshwari Devi, is drawn 100% freehand using the traditional five-finger method. For a 30-foot installation, I rely on a team of skilled artists to ensure we finish on time, but the soul of the work remains completely manual.

When you choose a cultural theme for your event, you want it to feel authentic. My goal is to capture the exact spirit of the art form, whether it is the divine energy seen in 'Kantara' or the pride associated with Rajyotsava.

My Approach to Cultural Art

My process begins with a sketch on the floor. I use limestone powder (chirodi) and vibrant pigments to build the image layer by layer. For large-scale installations in malls or public squares, we use bulk materials and a team of 3 to 5 artists to cover 200 to 400 square feet within a single day.

Common Themes & Styles

  • Folk & Mythology: Yakshagana masks, Daivaradhane motifs, and figures like Hanuman or Devi are frequent requests. These require careful blending of colors to get the skin tones and expressions right.
  • Modern Cultural Tributes: I often integrate movie-inspired elements if they fit the vibe, such as the vibrant blue and earth tones used in my 'Kantara' tribute pieces.
  • Event Suitability: Whether it is a temple jatra, a corporate lobby, or a public festival, I ensure the colors are bold enough to be seen from a distance.

If you have a specific cultural story or festival theme in mind, let me know. I can adapt the color palette and scale to fit your venue’s requirements.

Hi, I am Chandan. My art is basically my hometown on canvas, or in this case, on the floor. Whether it is the fierce energy of Yakshagana or a tribute to Karnataka’s legends, I pour all my passion into every grain of powder.
