Cozy Balconies and Reading Nooks in Mumbai

Your home needs a spot to just breathe. Whether it is a high-rise balcony or a quiet reading nook, I design these spaces to be your personal retreat from the daily rush. 🤍

A balcony designed to be a peaceful escape. It features a comfortable swing, a stone-clad wall, and built-in shelves for plants, bringing a touch of nature to this high-rise apartment.

A simple and elegant reading corner. A comfortable wingback chair, a large mirror to enhance the sense of space, and a classic lantern create the perfect spot to get lost in a good book.

Two different design concepts for a cozy Mumbai balcony. Both options use comfortable rattan furniture and greenery to create a perfect spot for morning coffee or evening chats with a view.

About this collection

When planning a balcony, skip the heavy furniture. In our Mumbai humidity, I always prioritize weather-resistant rattan or bamboo paired with moisture-wicking cushions. It keeps the space feeling airy and drastically cuts down on your maintenance effort, so you are spending your time relaxing, not cleaning.

Designing for small, intimate spaces is all about being clever with every square inch. A balcony should never feel like a storage unit for laundry. I focus on creating a layout that invites you outside, using vertical space for greenery or wall-mounted shelving to keep the floor clear.

Why the Details Matter

  • Material Selection: Mumbai weather is tough on interiors. I steer clients toward materials that age gracefully outdoors, like composite decking or treated wood, which hold up against sun and monsoon rains.
  • Lighting Sets the Mood: The right light changes everything. I use warm, ambient lanterns and low-voltage profile lighting rather than harsh overhead tubes. It turns a simple balcony into a sunset lounge.
  • Your Personal Nook: A reading corner needs to be isolated yet integrated. I love using mirrors to expand the visual depth of tight corners, making them feel like a private getaway rather than a cramped spot.

My approach is to treat these 'micro-spaces' with the same 'karigari' (craftsmanship) I bring to a full living room. From the texture of the seat to the exact placement of your plants, we ensure it looks like a magazine spread but functions like your favorite coffee spot. 🫶🏼
