Master Volleyball Blocking: Pro-Level Defensive Drills
Blocking is about timing, not just height. At BT Volleyball Academy, I teach you how to read the hitter, position your hands, and seal the net effectively. Start building your defensive wall today.
This drill focuses on a combined block. Players learn to move together and time their jumps to form a solid wall at the net against an attacker.
"Do as your partner does." This blocking drill emphasizes mirroring your partner's movements to ensure there are no gaps in the block.
I work closely with players on their single block training. Here, I'm guiding a player on the correct hand shape and penetration over the net.
Cross-step blocking is a key movement for middle blockers. This drill helps players practice the footwork needed to move quickly along the net.
This video shows two different skills: a single block practice at the net, followed by a drill for a one-hand underarm pass on defense.
This single block workout focuses on footwork and timing. Players practice moving to the correct position and jumping to intercept the ball.
A closer look at single block practice. We focus on the details, from the player's starting position to their hand placement when they penetrate the net.
About this collection
Most beginners just reach for the ball, but the real secret to a strong block is 'penetration'—bringing your hands across the net to shrink the attacker's angle. I don't just teach you to jump; I teach you to read the setter’s body language and move into place before the ball even leaves their hands. It’s about being in the right spot at the exact right second, every single time.
Defense wins games. If you can stop the ball at the net, you change the momentum of the entire match. Here at BT Volleyball Academy, my blocking program is designed to take you from a reactive player to a proactive wall.
How We Train Your Block
- Reading the Setter: Before you jump, you must read. We practice watching the setter’s hands so you know exactly where the ball is going before it gets there.
- Footwork Fundamentals: We drill the cross-step religiously. If your feet aren't fast, your hands will always be late. We use ladder drills and cone work to make this movement second nature.
- Hand Penetration: You aren't just reaching up; you are reaching over. We work on your shoulder strength and reach mechanics to ensure you can penetrate the net without touching it.
- Combined Blocking: In a real game, you aren't alone. We run partner drills where you and your teammate must move and jump as one. If there is a gap between you, the ball goes through. We close that gap.
Whether you are training at our Malleswaram facility or Yelahanka, my goal is the same: to turn you into a defender who makes the opponent think twice before spiking. No shortcuts, just hours of repetition until it’s perfect. Illi practice madidre (if you practice here), your game will definitely improve.
BT Volleyball Academy
I’m not just here to teach you volleyball; I’m here to build your game from the roots. We treat every practice like a championship match, making sure you learn the discipline and technique required to dominate at the net. If you're ready to put in the work and stop being just a beginner, let’s get on the court.
