Heritage and Conservation Architecture Projects
We approach historical restoration by balancing original architectural character with contemporary needs. Our process respects the soul of the building, ensuring every intervention serves its history while adapting to modern life.

About Heritage & Conservation Projects
Our work on the Nagapattinam Collector's camp office, a 100-year-old colonial structure, centered on minimal intervention to preserve its structural integrity. We focused on improving spatial flow and light rather than wholesale reconstruction, ensuring the residence honors its 19th-century origins while functioning for modern administrative needs.
The restoration of heritage sites requires a shift in mindset from traditional construction to one of patient observation. We start by listening to the building. What was the original intent? How have the layers of history, including additions, modifications, and natural wear, shaped its current state?
In the case of the Nagapattinam project, our objective was to strip away later, intrusive alterations to reveal the colonial character of the original camp office. This process involves working closely with local authorities to ensure that new interventions, such as updated plumbing or electrical layouts, are seamlessly integrated without compromising the historic fabric.
Materiality is paramount in conservation. We prioritize the use of traditional materials like lime mortar, red oxide, and original stone, which possess a thermal and aesthetic compatibility with historic structures that modern synthetic materials lack. By avoiding heavy structural changes, we maintain the building's original proportions. This approach not only preserves architectural heritage but also creates a resilient, breathable environment. Whether you are dealing with a pre-independence bungalow or a site of local historical significance, our goal is to extend the lifespan of the structure by making it relevant for the present, without erasing its past.
