About From Saree to Lehenga & Gowns
When I upcycle a saree, the trickiest part is managing the heavy borders and ensuring the fabric drapes naturally as a skirt or gown. I personally map out the pleat placement to make sure your original Kanjivaram or Bandhani motifs are showcased perfectly, so the new outfit retains the soul of the original saree.
Upcycling is not just about cutting fabric, it is about giving a second life to a piece of clothing you already love. Many clients bring me their mother’s old silk sarees or heavy Kanjivarams they no longer wear, and we turn them into modern silhouettes that are perfect for weddings or festivals.
My process starts with evaluating the saree’s length and border placement. Since silk and heavy cotton have different weights, I decide the best pattern, whether it is a flared lehenga with fine pleats or a structured gown. I focus on creating a silhouette that is flattering and easy to move in, which often means adding hidden supports or adjusting the lining so the garment does not feel too heavy.
