Traditional Indian Art and Folk Motif Paintings
I love bringing a touch of desi warmth to home decor. Whether it is intricate Rajasthani folk patterns or the graceful silhouettes of South Indian tradition, I hand-paint these pieces on wood to create art that feels personal and rooted in our heritage.
I recently explored a new art form with this Rajasthani painting on wood. This video shows the process of outlining and coloring the two women in their intricate traditional attire. I truly enjoyed capturing every detail, from their jewelry to the patterns on their clothes.
This painting, which I call "Kanasina Kanne" or "Dream Girl," is inspired by the timeless elegance of South Indian tradition. I painted this faceless portrait of a woman in a saree, adorned with flowers, standing by a temple pillar. The goal was to capture a feeling of grace, mystery, and heritage on a wooden canvas.
Here, a majestic peacock finds its perch in a paradise of vibrant flowers. This piece was painted on wood, allowing the natural texture to add depth to the scene. I focused on the peacock's brilliant plumage, contrasting the azure and green feathers with the bright floral background.
About this collection
I primarily paint these traditional themes on sanded wooden planks rather than standard canvas. The wood adds a natural grain texture that makes the folk patterns pop, and I seal every piece with two coats of professional-grade heavy-duty varnish so they are humidity-resistant, durable, and easy to maintain over time.
When I work on traditional Indian art, I treat it like storytelling. Whether I am capturing the intricate jewelry of a Rajasthani woman or the grace of a South Indian silhouette, I want these pieces to feel like they belong in a modern home while holding onto their cultural roots.
Why I Choose Wood
I prefer wood over canvas for these designs because the material itself adds character. Canvas can sometimes feel too stark, but the natural grain of wood interacts with the acrylic paint to create depth. I prep every piece myself: sanding, cleaning, and priming it with Gesso to ensure the paint adheres perfectly.
The Process & Quality
- Surface: I use durable wooden planks that are ready to hang, often including a hook or twine rope for easy installation.
- Colors: I use heavy body acrylics for high pigment and vibrancy.
- Protection: Humidity is a real challenge for artwork, so I finish everything with professional UV and dust-resistant varnish. This keeps the colors from fading and makes the piece easy to wipe clean.
Every piece is a collaboration. If you have a specific color palette that matches your living room or a traditional motif you have seen in your travels that you want to recreate, let me know. I enjoy the challenge of merging traditional layouts with custom requests. Plus, every commission helps me fund treatments for injured street animals, so your new decor comes with a little bit of heart.
