Painting on Everyday Items: Personalized Coasters and Stationery
Turning everyday items into art is simpler than you think. Come join me at Art Voyage to paint coasters, envelopes, and more, all while enjoying some quiet, creative time.
Here we are adding the finishing touches to a hand-painted envelope decorated with a semi-circle Mandala. It turns a simple piece of stationery into a work of art.
Look at these wonderful coasters painted by my little artists during a Dussehra workshop. It’s so much fun to see kids explore traditional designs and create something they can use.
About Art on Everyday Items
When painting on objects like coasters or envelopes, the biggest challenge is the surface.... Unlike standard paper, you are working on MDF or stationery, which behaves differently with paint. I will show you how to manage the paint consistency so it does not bleed, ensuring your design looks clean and is actually durable enough to be used.
Why Everyday Art Matters
There is something special about making art that you can actually hold and use. When we paint on coasters, envelopes, or bookmarks, we are moving beyond just 'hanging a picture on the wall.' We are creating functional pieces that carry a piece of your personality into your daily life. Whether you are crafting a gift for a friend or just adding a personal touch to your desk, these projects turn the mundane into something meaningful.
How We Approach It
- Surface Prep: We work with various materials, including MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard) and heavy-stock paper. Each surface requires a different approach to base-coating to ensure your paints pop and don't soak in unevenly.
- Design & Symmetry: For items like circular coasters, we often use Mandala techniques to ensure everything is balanced. I will guide you through the dotting or outlining process step-by-step so you don't feel overwhelmed by the pattern.
- Durability: I teach you how to apply finishes so your artwork is not just for show—it is meant to handle real-world use, like holding a coffee mug or being mailed as a gift.
Who Should Join?
If you think you cannot draw, this is the perfect place to start. You don't need years of experience. We keep the batches small—around 6 to 10 people—so I am right there to help you if your line goes crooked or if you're unsure about color choices. It is a relaxing, low-pressure environment where the goal is simply to have fun and create something beautiful.
Bring your curiosity and leave the materials to me. We provide everything you need, from the MDF bases to the brushes and acrylics.
