Learn Traditional Indian Folk Art With Step-by-Step Guidance
Whether it is the intricate patterns of Madhubani or the storytelling motifs of Kalamkari, I help you create your own heritage art masterpiece, one step at a time.
The final reveal of a vibrant Kalamkari 'Tree of Life' painting, full of color and detail. This traditional art form uses motifs from nature, like birds and flowers, to tell a story.
Here you can see the coloring process for the Kalamkari painting. We use pens and markers to fill in the intricate outlines, bringing the tree and peacock to life.
In my Kalamkari painting tutorial, I guide students as they replicate traditional designs. This video shows a student carefully studying a reference to create her own version of the classic peacock motif.
This colorful piece filled with birds and leaves is a wonderful example of Madhubani art. It was created by a student, who did a fantastic job with the bright colors and fine line work.
I was so proud of my student who created this beautiful Kalamkari peacock in one of my workshops. Seeing her hold the final, framed piece is what Art Voyage is all about.
This is a classic Madhubani fish painting, a style known for its intricate patterns and symbolism. In my folk art classes, we learn the history and techniques to create pieces just like this.
About The World of Indian Folk Art
In my workshops, we use pre-drawn templates and carbon tracing for the complex outlines, so you do not need to worry about freehand sketching if you are a beginner. We focus on the history and motifs, like the Tree of Life or the classic peacock, and I am right there to guide your brushwork, ensuring you walk away with a piece you are truly proud to hang on your wall.
Art is a story waiting to be told, and Indian folk art is one of the richest ways to tell it. In these sessions, we do not just copy designs, we explore the soul behind the art. You will learn the techniques behind styles like Kalamkari and Madhubani, understanding why specific motifs like the fish, birds, or the Tree of Life hold such cultural significance.
For many of my students, this is their first time picking up a brush or a fine-tip marker in years. That is perfectly fine. We keep batches small, usually around 6 to 10 people, which means I can sit with you, show you how to hold the pen, and help you get those fine lines just right.
We handle all the setup. You get high-quality 300 GSM watercolor paper or A4 canvas boards, along with waterproof fine-tip pens and high-pigment acrylics. You will not be staring at a blank page wondering where to start, because we provide templates to get the structure down. You focus on the meditative process of filling in those intricate patterns with color.
Whether you are looking to spend a mindful Sunday morning or want to pick up a new skill that connects you to our traditions, these workshops are about the journey, not just the final result.
