About Clay Handbuilding: A Date with Clay
In our handbuilding sessions, we focus on manual techniques like coiling, pinching, and slab work, so there is no need to handle an electric potter's wheel. We provide 500g to 1kg of natural Terracotta clay and all the tools you need—sculpting wires, sponges, and rollers—so you can just walk in, get your hands dirty, and craft your own mug or figurine.
A Grounding Creative Experience
Pottery is often seen as an intimidating craft requiring years of practice, but our handbuilding workshops are designed to break that barrier. By focusing on manual techniques rather than a wheel, you get a much more direct, tactile connection to the clay.
What You Will Learn
In our 2-hour sessions held at our HSR Layout studio, we walk you through the fundamentals of:
- Pinching: Using your thumbs to shape bowls and small vessels.
- Coiling: Stacking ropes of clay to build taller structures like mugs or vases.
- Slab Building: Rolling out flat sheets of clay to construct boxes or decorative items.
Practical Details for Your Visit
This is a 'make and take' experience. Because we use natural Terracotta clay, your finished piece will air-dry. We do not provide firing or glazing services, so the clay remains porous and retains its earthy finish. You take your greenware creations home immediately after the session, making it a great option if you want a finished piece without waiting weeks for kiln availability.
Whether you are looking for a unique date idea, a solo hobby, or a group activity, this workshop is about the process of slowing down and creating something from raw earth. No prior experience is needed, and we guide you step-by-step so you walk out with a piece you are proud of.
Art Beat
We started Art Beat to build a space where anyone, regardless of experience, could enjoy the process of making art. In our pottery sessions, we focus on making the experience fun and approachable, guiding you through handbuilding techniques so you leave with something you’ve crafted yourself. Come by the studio, leave the stress behind, and see what you can create.
