About Ramayan on Tabla: An Epic Retold

Most audiences expect traditional narration, but I use the Navrasa technique to convey specific emotions—like the tension of war or the serenity of devotion—solely through the interplay of nine different percussion instruments like Pakhawaj and Naal. This creates a deeply emotional sonic landscape that transcends mere musical accompaniment.

My production of Ramayan on Tabla is not simply a concert; it is an immersive narrative where rhythm becomes the storyteller. Instead of words, I rely on the Navrasa—the nine human emotions—translated through the distinct tonal qualities of nine different percussion instruments. You will hear the resonance of the Pakhawaj, the folk clarity of the Naal, and the traditional depth of the Tabla, all meticulously orchestrated to mirror the epic's pivotal moments. I integrate rhythmic poetry, known as Padhant, and vocal arrangements to anchor the soundscape in tradition while pushing the boundaries of modern acoustic storytelling. Whether it is depicting the grandeur of Ayodhya or the intensity of the battlefield, the composition relies on precise mic placement and theater-quality mastering to ensure the audience feels the shift in energy. I collaborate with a collective of talented musicians to ensure that every sequence, from the subtle nuances to the grand crescendos, remains true to the spiritual essence of the story while providing a fresh, contemporary listening experience.

I am Anuradha Pal, and for me, the Tabla is more than an instrument; it is a language of prayer and storytelling. My journey, blessed by the guidance of Ustad Allarakha ji and Ustad Zakir Hussain ji, is dedicated to exploring how deep human emotions can be expressed through rhythm.
