Oil on Metal Paintings: Unique Reflective Art
My oil-on-metal pieces use a mirror-finish rose gold surface to invite your own reflection into the artwork. It is an exploration of 'svayam'—self-discovery—where the painting changes depending on who is standing before it.
A closer look at "The God in small Lives," my 4x4 feet oil on metal piece. The reflective surface means the background changes with the light and the person viewing it, creating a living connection with the art.
This video shows the details of another oil on metal piece. You can see how the woman's face and the surreal horse figure are painted over the reflective surface, creating layers of reality and imagination.
A surrealist piece where a woman's portrait and a kingfisher interact on a reflective metal sheet. The viewer's own face appears in the background, creating a trinity between the observer, the subject, and the symbol.
This pair of paintings on metal explores spiritual symbolism with the tiger and the elephant. The reflective quality of the metal adds a divine glow, enhancing the sacred feeling of the subjects.
About Oil on Metal: Your Reflection in Art
Painting on metal is not like working on a traditional canvas. Because the industrial-grade 304 stainless steel surface is non-porous and mirror-smooth, I use a specialized oil layering technique to ensure the paint adheres perfectly without losing that reflective quality. Every piece comes with a microfiber cloth and specific cleaning instructions, because this metal surface is delicate—you have to treat it like a mirror, not just a wall hanging.
The core of my 'Oil on Metal' series lies in the interaction between the art and you. I use a Rose Gold PVD Mirror Finish on stainless steel sheets, which creates a negative space that is never truly static. When you look at the painting, your own reflection blends with the subjects I paint—often bold, solitary figures like tigers, birds, or human profiles. This creates a trinity between the observer, the subject, and the symbol.
The Process and Specifications
Each commission is a balance of precision and raw expression:
- Dimensions: Typically 24 x 30 inches.
- Framing: I frame these in wide-profile wooden frames (3-4 inches) in gold or metallic finishes to ground the reflective surface.
- Durability: While the oil is durable, the mirror surface requires care. I include a dedicated maintenance kit with each piece.
Why Rose Gold?
I moved to rose gold metal sheets because it adds a warm, divine glow that standard steel lacks. It captures light differently throughout the day, so the painting you see at noon in your drawing room will feel different than it does in the evening.
Commission Timeline
Because I have to let the oil cure properly on the non-porous metal surface, the timeline is fixed. Please account for 3 to 4 weeks of painting time, followed by 2 weeks of drying before I can safely frame and ship the work. Hey, I'm Ankur. I’m always poking at what makes us human, and this metal experiment is my favorite way to do it. When you buy one of these, you aren't just getting a painting—you're getting a permanent conversation between my brushstrokes and your own presence in the room.
