To get the full effect of these shadow stories, I need a space that can be completely darkened. I bring my own white screen frame and lighting rig, so whether you are hosting at home or in a community hall, we just need to dim the lights to let the magic begin.
Unlike my high-energy plush puppet shows, shadow puppetry is a calmer, more visual experience. I use intricate rigid cutouts manipulated with rods behind a backlit translucent screen, which instantly captivates children. It is a wonderful way to introduce mythology like the Ramayan, Diwali tales, or even bedtime classics in a way that feels like a real theatre production.
After the performance, I always do a quick demo to show the kids the mechanics behind the shadows. It turns a performance into a mini science lesson on light and silhouette art. Since this setup requires specific lighting conditions, I arrive early to handle the screen frame and LED setup, ensuring the room is ready for the show. It is such a rewarding way to share stories, and the kids always leave with a deeper sense of wonder about the characters.
