Artistic Inspiration from Karnataka's Ancient Temples
Art is how I see and remember the world. My travel sketches capture the history and energy of places like Ellora and Hirenallur, turning temple architecture into my personal collection of memories.
The magnificent Kailasa temple at Ellora Caves, a monolithic structure carved from a single rock. The scale and detail of this UNESCO World Heritage site are a profound source of artistic inspiration.
A closer look at the intricate carvings and architectural layers of the Ellora caves. Every surface tells a story, a testament to the skill of ancient artisans.
A view of the rock-cut caves from a distance. The way these structures are integrated into the natural cliffside is a lesson in harmony between nature and human creation.
Walking through the massive stone pillars inside one of the Ellora caves. The play of light and shadow in these ancient halls is something I often try to capture in my art.
Taking a moment to sit and absorb the incredible detail of the temple walls at Ellora. Being in such places fuels my passion for depicting heritage in my work.
Admiring the row of carved elephants that form the base of the Kailasa temple. These sculptures are a powerful symbol of the artistry and devotion that built this place.
The ancient temple in Hirenallur village, near Kadur. The stone carvings here are centuries old and a must-see for any artist interested in historical architecture.
A duplicate image of the serene and symmetrical entrance to the Hirenallur temple. I hope to return one day to sketch the temple's interior.
A detailed view of the temple's outer wall and shikhara, showcasing the intricate Hoysala-style carvings. Such craftsmanship is a deep well of inspiration.
A duplicate image showing the layers of detailed stone carvings on the temple exterior. Each sculpture and motif is a lesson in composition and form.
About Inspiration & Journeys
When I stand before an ancient structure like the Ellora caves or the Hirenallur temple, I don’t just see a monument; I see a lesson in composition and patience. I use my sketchbook to document the play of light on centuries-old stone carvings, translating the silence of these sacred spaces into ink and pencil studies that go beyond simple replication.
Capturing heritage is a dialogue between the past and my sketchbook. Places like the Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Chikkaballapura or the intricate Hoysala-style carvings in Hirenallur aren't just weekend destinations; they are schools of design.
When I sketch on-site, my goal is to document the kallina kettanegalu (stone carvings) and architectural nuances—the way the Vijayanagara pillars hold up the weight of history, or how the shadows change across a monolithic rock wall in Ellora. It requires a slow, intentional practice. Many of these drawings evolve from quick pen sketches done on the spot into detailed studies back in my studio.
This series is an open sketchbook of my travels across Karnataka and beyond, meant for those who find the same beauty I do in our shared history. Whether it's the rock formations of Yana or the dense gopurams of rural temples, these pieces are about preserving the feeling of being there. If you connect with these stories, I am happy to discuss creating custom work based on your own meaningful travel memories.
