Nature and Floral Art Studies
I capture the transient beauty of nature using colored pencils and mixed media. From the scent of a Champaka flower to the intricate patterns of butterfly wings, these drawings bring the natural world into your home.
A detailed colored pencil drawing of a Champaka flower, with a visiting insect. I used a live flower as a reference to capture its vibrant yellow hue and delicate form on brown paper.
This video shows my process of drawing the Champaka flower and the insect. I carefully layer colors to achieve realism, constantly referring back to the actual flower for accuracy.
Titled 'With Champaka', this mixed-media drawing is part of a series focusing on hands. Here, a hand gently holds the fragrant flower, a simple gesture full of meaning.
'Delicate Champaka', a diptych showing hands interacting with the flower's petals. This A3-sized piece explores the themes of touch, fragility, and the transient beauty of nature.
A behind-the-scenes look at my 'Hands with Champaka' series. This video shows me sketching the composition and studying the flower before rendering it in colored pencil.
A small study of a pink trumpet-shaped flower, drawn with colored pencils on brown paper. I enjoy capturing the beauty of individual blooms in these miniature artworks.
A detailed drawing of a butterfly's wing, focusing on its unique patterns and colors. This piece is a celebration of the small, intricate wonders of the natural world.
Another study of a butterfly's wing, this time with darker, iridescent tones. Using colored pencils on brown paper allows me to bring out the subtle shifts in color and light.
About Nature & Floral Studies
For these studies, I primarily work on toned Kraft or cartridge paper because it adds a warm, textured depth that standard white paper lacks. I use professional-grade colored pencils and finish each piece with a matte fixative spray so the pigments remain protected against smudging and wax bloom. Every drawing comes mounted, hand-signed, and includes a Certificate of Authenticity, so it is ready for your wall the moment it arrives.
My approach to nature studies is less about strict botanical illustration and more about capturing the feeling of a moment. Whether it is a specific flower I found during a walk or the patterns on an insect's wing, I am looking for the texture and the light that makes it real.
My Process
I often choose toned tan or brown paper as my canvas. This choice is intentional. It allows me to use white pencils to build highlights and darker tones to create depth, giving the drawings a three-dimensional quality that feels grounded. For the Champaka series, I relied on live references to get the vibrant yellow hues and the delicate curves of the petals correct.
The 'Hands with Nature' Series
One of my favorite ways to explore the natural world is through my 'Hands and Flowers' series. By placing a hand alongside the subject, I try to convey a sense of scale, interaction, and fragility. It is a way of saying that nature is something we hold and touch, not just observe from a distance.
Shipping and Care
I ship my artwork flat, protected between rigid honeycomb boards to prevent bending. I do not include frames for outstation orders to ensure the safety of the work during transit, but every piece comes with an acid-free window mount in off-white or black. This means you can easily find a standard-sized frame that matches your decor without needing professional help. If you have a specific plant or flower you would like me to study, reach out—I am always looking for new things to draw.
