Supported Balance & Standing Poses: Improve Your Stability with Aerial Yoga
Use the hammock as a partner to find your balance, deepen your stretches, and perfect your standing postures with gentle, supported alignment.
Here I am practicing a supported Natarajasana, or Dancer's Pose. The hammock helps with balance, allowing me to focus on the backbend and the opening of the shoulder and chest.
This is a variation of Virabhadrasana III, or Warrior 3. The hammock supports my torso, helping me maintain a straight line from my head to my heel while I build strength in my standing leg.
A supported standing figure-four stretch, which is excellent for opening the hips. Using the hammock for balance allows for a deeper and more stable stretch than doing it unsupported on the floor.
This clip shows a flowing sequence of standing poses using the hammock for light support. We move through different stances, challenging our balance and creating a graceful, dance-like practice.
Sometimes we just have fun. Here, I'm using the hammock for some playful jumps, which is a great way to build leg strength, improve coordination, and add a little cardio to our yoga practice.
This video demonstrates a flow that combines a standing leg stretch with a transition into a suspended pose. It highlights how we use the hammock to move seamlessly between grounded and aerial movements.
About Supported Balance & Standing Poses
When you are trying to hold a pose like Warrior 3, shaky legs can be the biggest distraction. Here, the hammock acts like a steady partner, holding some of your weight so you can stop wobbling and actually focus on your muscle engagement. It is not about making the movement easy, but about giving your body the support it needs to build strength safely while you refine your alignment.
Find Your Stability
Often, students struggle with standing poses because they are afraid of falling or simply haven't built the core stability required yet. The silk hammock changes that dynamic entirely. By taking off some of the load, you can explore the full range of a movement, whether it is a deep hip opener like a figure-four stretch or a challenging balance pose like Dancer's Pose.
Why This Works
This style is perfect for both beginners who find traditional standing poses intimidating and for advanced students looking to find new depth in their practice. You can adjust the fabric to give you just enough support to get into the pose without the fear of tipping over. It allows you to hold poses longer and find new nuances in your alignment that you might miss when struggling just to stay upright on the mat.

We focus on small, intentional movements. Whether we are flowing through a sequence or holding a static pose to build endurance, you will find that you can push your limits further when you know you have that extra bit of help.
