Music is a continuous journey, and every beat I play is a tribute to the teachers who showed me the way. From my father, Pt. Sunil Banerjee, to my Carnatic guruji, Vidwan S Sekhar, my sound is built on the wisdom they passed down.

Celebrating Guru Purnima with my father and Guru, Pt. Sunil Banerjee. This video captures a moment of our musical conversation, a dialogue between two generations of tabla players.

A vintage photograph of my father, Guru, and hero, Pandit Sunil Banerjee, on his birthday. His legacy and teachings are my biggest inspiration.

A collage showing me performing with my father. These moments on stage together are some of the most cherished of my life, representing the continuation of our family's musical tradition.

As a tribute to the legendary Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri, I'm playing a Lucknow Dhig Dhina Kaida he taught me. This showcases the pure, traditional side of my tabla playing, rooted in the teachings of the great masters.

About My Gurus & My Legacy

I don't just play rhythms; I carry forward musical conversations that started decades ago. When you hear me perform a Lucknow Dhig Dhina Kaida or weave in South Indian rhythmic patterns, you are hearing the direct influence of my father and my Gurus. Each lesson they passed down—from the mathematical precision of Carnatic rhythm to the fluid strokes of our tradition—lives in the specific, polished tabla tracks I create for your projects.

My approach to the tabla is defined by the 'Gurukul' system of learning, where discipline and soul matter just as much as technical precision. My father, Pt. Sunil Banerjee, taught me that the instrument should breathe, not just produce sound. This philosophy governs my studio work—I do not just hit the drum to keep time; I look for the space where the rhythm truly complements your melody.

Whether we are working on a traditional Hindustani classical piece or a modern fusion track, I apply these foundational techniques to ensure the recording feels authentic. I regularly bridge the gap between styles, using my training in both Hindustani and Carnatic rhythms to offer something unique for your songs.

How Lineage Shapes Your Sound

  • Technical Precision: My studio sessions focus on delivering crisp, high-resolution WAV files with distinct stems, ensuring your mix engineer has total control.
  • Rhythm Production: If you are building a track from scratch, I can layer tabla with auxiliary percussion like Cajon or shakers, maintaining the dynamic flow of your Verse, Chorus, and Bridge.
  • Authenticity: I avoid generic loops. Every 'fill' and 'theka' is played live, capturing the subtle variations that give human-performed music its life.

If you are looking for a session musician who treats your track with the same respect as a classical concert, we should talk. My goal is to add a layer of depth to your production that stays true to the spirit of the instrument while fitting perfectly into a contemporary soundscape.

My name is Unmesh and I live for the rhythm. My tabla is an extension of the lessons I received from my father, Pt. Sunil Banerjee, and my Guruji, Vidwan S Sekhar. I treat every project as an opportunity to keep that musical conversation alive.
