I believe music is a conversation. Whether it is the gentle strings of a santoor or the nuances of a ghazal, my tabla playing focuses on deep listening and providing a solid rhythmic base that supports the lead artist.

A beautiful practice session with Vinay Desai bhai on the Santoor. We are exploring Raag Antardhwani, a creation of the legend Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma ji, showing the synergy between tabla and santoor.

A candid shot while playing with Vinay Desai bhai. These performances are as much about the connection between the artists as they are about the music itself.

A motion-blur photo capturing the speed and energy of my hands during a fast-paced section of a performance. This shows the physical intensity required for complex classical pieces.

A moment of reflection during a performance. Accompanying another artist requires intense focus and anticipation of their next musical phrase.

A glimpse of a soundcheck and performance with the brilliant Sarod and Sitar duo, Alam and Sitarify bhai, in Albuquerque. This shows the setup for a traditional Indian classical concert.

A remote collaboration with the talented vocalist Atri Kota. This split-screen video shows how I can accompany a singer in Raag Yaman, providing a steady and expressive tabla accompaniment from my studio in Mumbai.

After a lovely Ghazal performance in Delhi. I enjoy accompanying vocalists, as it requires a delicate and responsive style of playing to complement the poetry and melody.

To celebrate Durga Puja, I created this jam session blending the tabla with the festive sounds of the Dhaak. This is an example of how I can create thematic and culturally rich percussion pieces for special projects.

Celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi by playing rhythms inspired by Dhol Tasha on the tabla. This is a tribute to Maestro Ustad Taufiq Qureshi ji and shows how festive and folk rhythms can be adapted for the tabla.

About Indian Classical Collaborations

Accompanying a vocalist or a string instrument requires more than just technique; it requires breath. In my sessions, I focus on the 'Sam'—the landing beat—anticipating the artist's phrase so the rhythm supports the melody rather than competing with it. My role is to make the soloist sound their absolute best.
