Alignment Over Ambition: The 'Why' Behind Each Pose
Yoga is not about touching your toes, it is about keeping your spine erect. Understanding the mechanics behind every movement is the only way to avoid injury and actually reap the therapeutic benefits of your practice.
In a forward bend like Paschimottanasana, the goal is not to touch your toes but to lengthen your spine. I teach that it is more important to go forward with a straight back, rather than down with a curved one, to protect your spine and open your body correctly.
Yoga is often misunderstood. It is not just exercise, nor is it only for flexible people. My goal is to clear these misconceptions and show that yoga is a deep practice of self-awareness available to everyone.
There are many myths about yoga, such as the idea that one style is superior or that it's a quick fix for health problems. I teach that yoga is a holistic and gradual journey of uniting the mind, body, and breath.
About Alignment Over Ambition: The 'Why' Behind Each Pose
When you are in a forward bend, notice if your back is curving just to reach the floor. My teaching focuses on that exact moment. I use props like wooden blocks and rope walls to help you maintain a straight spine because that is where the energy actually flows. If you hunch, you block that flow. We pause, we correct, and we align before we ever try to go deeper.
Most yoga classes push you to be flexible, but I push you to be aware. In my sessions at The YogArt Studio in Vile Parle, we strip away the competition. If your spine is hunched in Paschimottanasana (seated forward bend), you are not practicing yoga. You are just straining your muscles. My method is about structural correction, not performance.
Students often come in wanting to do the perfect pose for social media. I tell them to put their ego aside. Real yoga therapy, especially for issues like Spondylitis, stiffness, or general anxiety, requires strict alignment. We use rope walls for spinal decompression and bolsters to support your body so you can breathe, not struggle. Props are not a sign of weakness. They are tools to help you find the pose that fits your anatomy, not the other way around.
My classes are capped at 8 to 10 students because I need to observe your breathing pattern and pelvic alignment. I do not believe in continuous flow if the foundation is shaky. We focus on the 'don'ts'—what not to do is as important as the pose itself. When you learn to listen to your body rather than forcing it, the tension naturally dissipates. This is the difference between a standard workout and true yoga therapy.
