Master Hand Tool Joinery: From Chisels to Joints
Go back to the basics and feel the wood. In this session, we trade power tools for chisels and Japanese saws to create strong, clean joints with your own hands.
This is where craftsmanship begins. Using precise Japanese saws and sharp chisels, participants learn to create intricate half-lap joints in teak wood. It's a skill that takes practice but forms the foundation of fine woodworking.
A classic woodworking scene: a workbench with chisels, a mallet, and a half-lap joint in progress. This is the heart of our hand tool joinery workshop, focusing on precision and technique.
The beautiful result of precise work. This interlocking structure is made entirely with half-lap joints, showcasing how you can create complex forms with this fundamental technique.

About Hand Tool Joinery: The Craft of Connection
You'll be using high-precision Japanese Zetsaws, which cut on the pull stroke rather than the push. It makes a huge difference in control when you are carving out those half-lap joints. You don't need to be a pro to get that satisfying click when two pieces of wood lock together perfectly.
There is a specific kind of quiet that happens when you put down the power tools and pick up a chisel. Our joinery workshop is all about this shift in pace. We focus on the fundamental techniques that have held furniture together for centuries, specifically the half-lap and the mortise and tenon.
We provide all the gear, from Zetsaws to marking tools, so you don't need to bring anything but curiosity. Whether you are a total beginner or someone who has messed around with DIY projects before, we walk you through the process step by step. You will learn how to measure with precision, how to hold a chisel so you have actual control, and how to plane a surface until it is smooth to the touch.
We work primarily with Pine for practice, though we often have Teak upgrades available for that final piece you want to take home. It is not about turning out factory-perfect furniture in a single day. It is about learning the mechanics of how wood fits into wood. When you successfully cut a joint that holds together without a single screw or nail, you stop seeing furniture as just 'stuff' and start seeing the craft behind it. That is the real gyan we talk about. If you are in Bangalore, come by our space in Horamavu and see why we are so obsessed with the process.
