Woodworking Tools and Techniques: A Practical Guide
Get a behind-the-scenes look at the Kydo workshop. From sharp hand planes and Japanese chisels to router jigs and 3D-printed workshop upgrades, see the gear that helps us build real things from scratch.
This is a cam-based clamping system I made for use with a router. I'm using it here with a V-bit to carve out slots for a nail sorting tray.

The beautiful curls of wood shavings, known as "spills," created by a sharp hand plane. This is one of the most satisfying sights in woodworking.
A typical scene on my workbench. You can see a router, clamps, measuring tools, and safety earmuffs. These are the essential tools of the trade.
A wide shot of the workshop. It's a space designed for creativity, with tools organized on the walls and workbenches ready for the next project.

This is a 3D-printed baseplate I designed to adapt my Makita cordless router for use with a guide rail. It's a great example of how modern tech can enhance traditional woodworking.
I've upgraded my table saw by integrating a router underneath. This allows me to use the saw's fence and dust collection system for routing, which is a huge improvement.

About Inside the Workshop: Tools & Techniques
When you walk into my workshop, you are not just seeing tools, you are seeing a workflow. I combine traditional hand tools like chisels and Japanese pull saws with modern tech such as 3D-printed router baseplates to get clean, precise cuts every time. Whether we are calibrating a table saw or sharpening a plane, the focus is on mastering the machine so you can focus on the wood.
The Workshop Setup
I built the Kydo space to be an efficient, hands-on learning environment. You will find it stocked with both the heavy lifters and the precision instruments needed to take a rough board to a finished project.
- Power Tools: We rely on Jigsaws, Circular Saws, and Routers (Palm and Table). You will learn how to safely manage power, from edge routing to dados.
- Hand Tools: This is where the magic happens. We use chisels, hand planes, and Japanese pull saws. Using hand tools helps you understand wood grain, tension, and the satisfaction of a clean, quiet cut.
- Custom Upgrades: I believe in making the shop work for you. I regularly 3D-print parts to adapt my gear, like baseplates for my Makita cordless router. It is a practical lesson in how modern tech enhances traditional craft.
Why Technique Matters
It is easy to watch a video, but it is different to hold a tool and feel the resistance of the wood. The "flow state" happens when your hands, the tool, and the material work together. In these sessions, we focus on:
- Precision Cutting: Learning how to read the grain and cut along it, not against it.
- Joinery Logic: Understanding how parts fit together, whether it is a simple half-lap or complex, glue-free Japanese Kumiko joinery.
- Safety First: From dust collection systems to proper clamping (including custom cam-based systems), I teach you how to keep all ten fingers while getting the job done.
Whether you are a designer prototyping a furniture piece or someone just wanting to build a stool for your living room, the technique stays the same. Understand the tool, respect the material, and make something real.
Kydo
I am Shwetabh, and I run Kydo. I believe that swapping screens for sawdust is the best way to spend a weekend. Whether you want to master a Japanese pull saw or figure out how to calibrate a router, I am here to help you get your hands dirty and build something you can be proud of.
