The Bookyardigans Club: Interactive Reading for Kids
Join a community where books come alive through discussion, debate, and discovery. We help kids in Gurgaon go beyond the page to share perspectives and truly connect with every story they read.
A montage of our Bookyardigans Club in action over the years. From our first online sessions to our current hybrid model, it shows the journey of building a community of young thinkers and readers.
An online session with our Bookyardigans. Even on a screen, the discussions are lively and insightful as children hold up their books and share their thoughts on the stories.
An offline book club session with our youngest group of readers. We use fun worksheets and activities to help them engage with the story and express their understanding.
A happy group of Bookyardigans at the library, holding the books they've just discussed. Being in the physical space, surrounded by books, adds another layer of excitement to our club meetings.
A showcase of the diverse and exciting books we've read in the Bookyardigans Book Club over nine seasons. Each book is carefully selected to spark curiosity and conversation.
A selection of books read in one of our book club seasons, covering genres from historical fiction like 'Queen of Ice' to biographies like 'It's Trevor Noah'. We ensure a diverse reading list for our members.
Here are some of the captivating books from another season, including fantasy like 'The Land of Roar' and mystery with 'Agatha Oddly'. This variety keeps our young readers engaged and excited for the next book.
From classics like 'Ramona Quimby' to modern Indian stories like 'Ninja Nani', this collage shows the range of books our youngest readers explore. We introduce them to different authors and styles early on.
A powerful quote from 'The Ogress and the Orphans', a book we discussed in our club. We often pause to reflect on profound lines like these, which teach valuable life lessons.
"We are like patchwork quilts." A beautiful quote from 'The First Rule of Punk' that sparked a wonderful discussion about identity and self-acceptance in our young adult group.
About The Bookyardigans Club
My club isn't about finishing a reading list or quizzing children; it is about creating a safe space for real, honest conversation. In our fortnightly sessions, we don't just read. We debate character choices, analyze plot twists, and reflect on life skills, whether we are meeting in my Gurgaon library or connecting via Zoom.
Beyond the Page
I believe children are natural philosophers. My Bookyardigans Club is designed to tap into that curiosity. Unlike typical reading programs, we focus on the why and how of a story. We don't just ask, 'What happened next?' We ask, 'Why do you think the character made that choice?' and 'How would you handle that situation?'
How We Work
- Age-Segmented Groups: From 5-year-olds finding joy in picture books to 14-year-olds tackling complex themes, we divide groups to ensure everyone feels heard and challenged at their level.
- Hybrid Flexibility: We thrive both offline in my Sector 50 library and online. Whether your child is local or joining from elsewhere, they are part of the same buzzing, supportive community.
- Research-Backed Selection: I select books that challenge perspectives—from global bestsellers to insightful Indian stories like Ninja Nani. The lists are curated to spark curiosity.
Why Join?
By discussing themes like empathy, friendship, and diverse social issues, we help children articulate their own feelings and build critical thinking skills. It is truly a journey where I learn as much from them as they do from the books. We don't just want kids to be readers; we want them to be thinkers. Come join us for our next season and let’s explore new worlds together.
