Explore the freedom of creating without the wheel. Pinch, coil, and sculpt your own unique forms in a relaxed studio setting.

There is so much strength and grace in these hands. Here, a student is rolling out a large slab of clay, the first step to creating a big, impressive hand-built piece.

A whimsical sculpture of a creature resting on a leaf, waiting for the Raku firing. Hand-building allows for this kind of storytelling and detailed character work.

Giving the final touches to a terracotta sculpture. You can see the character in the figure's face and posture. In the background, I am preparing clay for the next creation.

A beautiful collection of simple, rustic pinch pots. This is one of the most ancient and intuitive ways of working with clay, connecting you directly to the material.

This student is using the coiling technique to build a large, organic vase. Each layer is carefully added and smoothed, allowing the form to grow slowly and intentionally.

A student carefully shapes the rim of a large, textured bowl made with the coiling method. Hand-building is a slow, meditative process that yields beautifully unique results.

Happiness is a finished piece! This video captures the fun of a hand-building session, with students laughing and enjoying the process of making their own unique items.

A student carefully works on a textured slab piece. Hand-building is perfect for creating intricate surfaces and geometric forms that are difficult to achieve on the wheel.

A student sculpting a small Ganesha idol. It's wonderful to see personal and cultural expression come to life through clay.

A smiling student smoothing the walls of her hand-built pot. The joy of the process is evident in her expression.

About Beyond the Wheel: Hand-Building & Sculpting

Working without the wheel means slowing down. Whether you are pinching a simple pot or coiling a tall vase, you are in total control of the shape. I will teach you how to prepare the clay and construct your form, but the final texture—the fingerprints, the slight lean—that is all you. It is not about perfect geometry here; it is about making something that feels like you.

Why Hand-Building?

Most people think pottery requires a spinning wheel, but some of the most soulful work happens when you set the wheel aside. Hand-building allows for patience and storytelling. We use techniques like pinching, where your thumbs become the primary tool, and coiling, where we stack clay ropes to build height and volume. This is how you create pieces that hold the warmth of the maker.

What You Will Learn

In my Delhi studio, we focus on the foundation. You will learn to wedge your clay properly, manage moisture levels so your work does not crack, and understand how to join slabs or coils so they survive the kiln. We handle everything from the initial pinch pot to larger slab-built vessels.

The 'Galti' Philosophy

In my studio, there is a saying: Artist ka matlab hai galti karna (Being an artist means making mistakes). If you are looking for a factory-finished mug, you might be frustrated. If you are looking to learn, get your hands dirty, and maybe make something slightly wonky but entirely yours, you will love it here. We embrace the unpredictable nature of clay. You will leave with a piece you are proud of—not because it is perfect, but because you built it, step by step.

I am Suvajit. I have spent years learning the rhythm of clay in Santiniketan and Delhi, and now I just want to share that joy with you. My studio is a space where we value the 'galti' (mistake) as much as the finished piece, so come ready to get your hands dirty.
