Hand-Building Pottery: Learn the Art of Sculpting Clay
Forget the spinning wheel for a moment. Here, we slow down to build things piece by piece with our hands, embracing every wobble and crack along the way.
The secret to strong hand-built pottery is the "slip and score" method. This video shows how we score the edges and apply clay slip to securely join two pieces of clay together. It's like pottery glue.
Watch as simple clay slabs and shapes come together to form a whimsical, multi-level structure. Hand-building allows for so much architectural freedom and creative expression.
Here is another look at the hand-building process, from cutting the initial slabs to assembling a small house incense holder. Each step, from scoring to painting, adds to the final character of the piece.
My mind can overthink, but it always becomes quiet when my hands are busy with clay. Here, I am hand-sculpting a small clay dog, a simple and meditative process that brings a lot of peace.
About Creating with Your Hands: Hand-Building & Sculpting
Hand-building is the opposite of rushing. It's about 'slip and score', the patient process of joining clay slabs so they don't fall apart in the kiln. If you have ever felt like your brain is too loud, spending two hours sculpting a piece with your fingers is the quietest therapy you will find.
Think of hand-building as creating with clay blocks, but with a lot more soul. Unlike the wheel, where you are often fighting centripetal force, hand-building allows you to take your time. We use slabs to build structures, coils for vases, or just pinch clay into little animal figurines. It is perfect if you are a beginner, as no prior experience is needed, just a bit of patience.
At my Delhi studio, we focus on the process, not just the finished mug or bowl. Whether you are learning slab-building for a lantern or pinch techniques for a bowl, the goal is to get messy. I keep groups small because hand-building needs focus. And yes, things might crack. That is just clay being clay. We talk about how to prep your pieces so they survive the firing process, turning your ideas into actual, usable ceramic art.
