The Philosophy of Rhythm: Why We Drum

Rhythm isn't just music—it's how we connect, de-stress, and find our inner peace. In these talks, I share the heartbeat behind the work we do at Taal Inc.

Rhythm is Life. In this clip from my TEDx series, I share a Malinke proverb: "Without joy, there is no music; without music, there is no joy." This simple truth is the foundation of everything we do.

What is rhythm to you? In this throwback to my second TEDx talk, I explore the different meanings of rhythm: as balance, as the beat of the heart, as life itself. Know rhythm, know life.

My guru, Grandmaster Djembe Fola Mamady Keïta, taught that drumming creates connections. In this TEDx clip, I expand on his wisdom, explaining how the drum also connects you to your inner self, the source of your potential.

In my TEDx talk, I share a simple way to think about coping with stress, inspired by Master Shifu. It’s about finding that 'inner peace', that moment of thinking about nothing. Drumming is one of the most powerful ways I know to get there.

It is a part of us to synchronize and create music together. This clip from my TEDx talk explains the concept of entrainment, the powerful, natural phenomenon where we all find a common beat, which is the magic of a drum circle.

In this clip, I share some of my key learning moments from my journey with Taal Inc. The most important one is the need to be healthy and relaxed yourself, especially when you work in the area of health and stress reduction.

About this collection

These videos are more than just talks; they are the foundation for how we facilitate every drum circle at Taal Inc. Whether you are curious about our corporate team-building approach or looking for personal wellness through rhythm, these clips explain why we don't just teach beats—we focus on building real human connection. Understanding concepts like 'entrainment'—how we naturally sync up—will give you a clear, honest idea of what to expect when you finally sit down with a djembe in your hands.

At Taal Inc, rhythm is the language we use to bridge gaps between people. When you watch these segments, you will see that our approach isn't about complex, virtuosic drumming. It is about accessibility. My guru, Mamady Keïta, taught us that the djembe knows no borders, and that is the philosophy we bring to every event we host in Pune and across India.

Understanding the Approach

  • Why TEDx? These talks summarize years of working with over 100,000 people, from corporate offices to inclusive wellness groups. They explain the psychological shift that happens when you drum—that moment of finding inner peace where you stop overthinking and start simply being.
  • What is Entrainment? You will hear me talk about the pendulum principle. It is the science behind why a group of strangers, within minutes of starting a drum circle, begins to play as one. It is not magic; it is a natural human instinct to synchronize when we share a common rhythm.
  • Is this for me? Whether you are a business leader looking to break down office silos, an individual seeking a daily stress-buster, or a budding facilitator wanting to learn the 'Find Your Inner Rhythm' curriculum, these clips ground you in the philosophy of the work. Rhythm is in your speech, your movement, and your thoughts. When you are ready to stop watching and start playing, my team and I are here to help you get started with a session that fits your needs.

I am Varun, and for me, rhythm is the quickest way to get out of your head and into your heart. I started Taal Inc to share this joy, and these talks are just me sharing the lessons I have gathered from the djembe and my own journey. Let's drum together.
