Designing Communal Spaces with Purpose
I create community spaces that move beyond basic function to foster genuine human connection. From inclusive rehabilitation facilities to residential clubhouses, every layout is planned to enhance how people interact within their environment.
The entrance to the KMYF Rehabilitation Center is designed to be both welcoming and inspiring. The rising volumes of brick and glass, combined with a perforated metal screen, create a dynamic interplay of solid and void. This design provides filtered light and a sense of arrival, setting a hopeful tone for a space dedicated to healing.
This is the main kerb appeal for the KMYF Rehabilitation Center. The design uses rectangular brick volumes interspersed with large glass sections to create a warm, wellness-centric feeling. The floating canopy roof adds a light, identifying element to the structure.
Universal accessibility was a cornerstone of my design for the KMYF Center. The indoor aqua therapy pool features a gently sloping ramp, ensuring it is inviting and usable for everyone. This detail reflects my belief that great design should be inclusive and empowering.
This bird's-eye view shows my site planning for the KMYF Center on a challenging, tapered plot. I positioned the main building to the west and dedicated the larger, more accessible area to public functions like the swimming pool and plaza, creating a buffer from busy roads and a serene context for the facility.
Another aerial view of the KMYF Center, this image shows how the building form responds to the skewed shape of the land. My design solution creates efficient use of space while establishing a clear separation between the private rehabilitation functions and the public-access amenities.
This is the lounge area of the Shilpa Rathna Apartment Clubhouse, a space I designed for lifestyle and connection. The refined design language uses clean lines, neutral tones, and warm textures to create a sanctuary for shared experiences, from casual conversations to formal meetings.
The waiting lounge and office at the Shilpa Rathna Clubhouse showcase a balance of comfort and professionalism. I used a glass partition to maintain visual openness while defining the workspace. The sculptural pendant lights and warm material palette create an environment that is both elegant and welcoming.
The indoor games room at the Shilpa Rathna Clubhouse is designed for leisure and community fun. I created a vibrant and energetic space with dedicated zones for various activities like pool, table tennis, and foosball, ensuring there is something for every resident to enjoy.
This multipurpose hall in the Shilpa Rathna Clubhouse is designed for flexibility. The clean, uncluttered space can be configured for community events, wellness classes, or private functions. The neutral color palette and ample natural light make it an adaptable and pleasant environment.
The interior of the 'Inhabiting The Forest' experience center is a dialogue between nature and built form. Framed by floor-to-ceiling glass, the lounge offers uninterrupted views of the landscape, while the layered textures and warm wood ceiling create a refined and comfortable interior.
About Designing for Connection and Purpose
When I approach a project like the KMYF Rehabilitation Center, the design is not just about the building; it is about how someone experiences it. I specifically designed the indoor aqua therapy pool with a gentle, inclusive ramp, ensuring the space is truly accessible to everyone. This is how I translate the concept of care into physical architecture, ensuring every user feels both supported and welcomed.
Great design in communal spaces requires a departure from standard templates. Whether it is a rehabilitation center in Kengeri or a 6,275 sq ft clubhouse in Bangalore, my team and I prioritize site-specific planning and universal accessibility.
Designing for Inclusion
At the KMYF Rehabilitation Center, the primary challenge was the tapered shape of the site. To manage this, we positioned the main building to the west, using the larger, accessible areas in the north-east for public functions like the swimming pool and plaza. This layout acts as a buffer from the busy roads while creating a calm, healing environment. The use of perforated metal screens and rising volumes of brick and glass provides filtered, natural light, which is essential for wellness-centric architecture.
Flexibility and Flow
For the Shilpa Rathna Apartment Clubhouse, the focus shifted to creating a sanctuary for shared experiences. The interior design utilizes a palette of neutral tones and warm woods, punctuated by sculptural pendant lights. We prioritized flexible zones—the multipurpose hall can easily transition from a wellness class to a private function, while the glass partitions in the waiting lounge maintain visual connectivity without sacrificing the quiet needed for office tasks.
The Human Element
In every project, from experience centers like 'Inhabiting The Forest' to community clubhouses, our process remains consistent: discovery, then design. We plan for human movement, ensuring that spaces like games rooms, pools, and courtyards feel both sculptural and lived-in. By focusing on tactile quality and natural light, we ensure the built environment serves the people who use it, rather than existing merely as an aesthetic object.
Svamitva Architecture Studio
I am Akshay Mehta, and I lead a team of 24 thinkers at Svamitva Architecture Studio. We do not just build structures; we obsess over how light falls, how materials feel, and whether a space actually brings people together. My work is about finding the soul of a project before we ever draw a line.
